Locks of Love Loses/Wastes/Sells $6 Million Worth of Hair, Says a Watchdog Group

So, you spend two years growing out your hair to help sick kids get a much-needed wig. Allegations about what happens next might surprise you.
Considering chopping your long hair into a trendy lob? Here's some news you need before you donate those 8+ inches to Locks of Love: Watchdog group "Nonprofit Investor" has accused the company of wasting millions of dollars worth of donated hair.

The group came up with these shocking numbers from a 2004 USA Today article, which stated that Locks of Love received 2,000 to 3,000 donations a week. Multiply that by 52 weeks and the firm concluded that Locks of Love receives about 104,000 hair donations a year, which should make 2,000 hairpieces. Yet the charity only created 317 custom wigs in 2011. Hmmmmm.

The founder of Locks of Love, Madonna Coffman, defended the charity: "We never in 15 years have counted hair donations ... when hair donations come in, they're opened and put in color bins ... I don't know what the purpose would be to count donations."

Call me crazy, but shouldn't an organization that's seeking to provide the highest quality hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children want to know how many children they can help? Isn't the point of charities to reach as many people as you can, and strive to reach more each year?

Until it's clearer as to what's happening to all that donated hair at Locks of Love, you might want to choose a different charity when you go for the chop. Pantene Beautiful Lengths or Wigs for Kids are great (and transparent) organizations.
