You'll Never Believe What this Artist Used as "Paint"

Warning: It's not for the faint of heart. Is it art or TMI?

There's nothing particularly artistic about that "time of month," regardless of what most silly, girlie tampon commercials would have you believe. (Cue the all-white outfits, endless smiles, frolicking in flowers.) Most of us probably think of our periods as annoying (at best), gross, and painful, or something along the lines of this this fake tampon ad from Russia.

Chilean artist Carina Úbeda Chacana has a different view: she used her menstrual blood in her new installation, titled "Cloths." The exhibit showcases five years worth of her menstrual blood, displayed on 90 used sanitary rags. Each cloth has been disinfected to eliminate odors (thankjeebus), and is embroidered with words like "Production," "Destroyed," and "Discard," below each stain. Why menstrual blood? Chacana said she wanted to "mix art with something personal." I think we can all agree: mission accomplished.
