In the quest for perfect brows, I've tried just about every brow product under the sun -- from pencils and powders to pomades and gels. Somehow, the product whose name is practically synonymous with #browsonfleek -- Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz, $21, -- had never crossed my path -- until now. Curious about how this cult brow pencil stacks up against my current go-tos, I decided to give the Brow Wiz a thorough road-test and review to answer the ultimate question: Does this product really live up to the hype?
Anastasia Beverly Hills is widely credited with starting the current brow craze. The brand that started out as a bespoke brow salon blew up when Vogue and the Kardashian clan discovered Anastasia Soare's ability to transform a face with expertly shaped brows. She soon launched a line of brow products to help consumers get salon-quality brows at home and the rest is history.
The Brow Wiz is a superskinny, retractable pencil with a fat spoolie attached to one end. There are 10 different shades to choose from -- from light to dark and cool to warm -- and ulta.com
's shade finder chart makes it very simple to find your ideal match. For me, the Medium Brown shade blended seamlessly into my fairly full (though patchy) eyebrows.
I like my brow products to be simple and straightforward, and to produce natural-looking results. . Back in high school, I -- like so many other women -- overplucked my brows, leaving them sparse in certain areas. Over the last couple years, I've made a point of growing them out, but I still need to fill them in to achieve that full, symmetrical brow shape that's plastered all over my Instagram feed.
The Brow Wiz's ultra-fine tip is perfect for this kind of precise work. It mimics the look of individual hairs so the look is natural, not overdone. The extra-fluffy spoolie allows you to blend the product seamlessly so that your brows -- not the product -- are what stand out.
I'm not going to lie; it takes about two minutes with my Brow Wiz to achieve the look I'm going for. I start by applying soft, short, strokes in an upward motion under my brows to clean up the line along the underside of my brow bone. Next, I continue with similar strokes to fill in any areas that are lacking fullness. Finally, I use the spoolie end of the pencil to blend any areas of product that are too densely packed and make sure the hairs are all brushed in the right direction.
The End Result
After applying Anastasia Brow Wiz, I'm beyond impressed by how natural my brows look. The color of the pencil really does mimic my brow color and the fine-tipped applicator ensures a natural finish. My brows look full, rather whole, again -- without the painted on/stenciled in look. Despite the fact I'm an avid gym-goer and frequent face-toucher (I often forget that I'm wearing makeup), my brows manage to stay intact all day without smearing or smudging.
While the Anastasia Brow Wiz looks a lot like other brow pencil/spoolie combos, this really is a special product. The price is pretty comparable to other prestige brow pencils, but the formula is what makes it stand out. I was most impressed by the natural range of shades and the product's ability to blend in and look like actual hair. So long, Sharpie-like brows! I also appreciate how compact it is and how simple it is to use -- it's definitely something I would take with me on vacation. If you want simple, natural-looking brows that stay put all day, Anastasia Brow Wiz is definitely worth a try.
