12 Little Tweaks That Will Make Your Work Environment Better

Positive and productive vibes only please!

Let the natural light in

Decreased sun exposure can cause your serotonin levels to drop, which can in turn leave you feeling sleepy and stressed. So, open up those office blinds — and make sure that there is no furniture blocking out the sunshine. (Just make sure that the sun isn't causing a glare on your monitor or causing strain in your vision.)

If there's not much natural light to be had, put a lamp that mimics natural light on your desk. You should also go out from time to time to get your much-needed sunlight exposure. (Though don't forget to wear sunblock!)

Have an outdoor view

Another reason to open up those blinds is to get some views of the outside world. You're lucky if your desk is by the window because nice views can improve your performance by 16 percent.

If landscape views aren't really an option to your office space, you may add pictures of outdoor environment to your desk or the wall next to you. Pick a photo of your favorite city or tropical island!

Adjust the office temperature

It's not just in your head: The blasting AC in your office can negatively affect your productivity. A 2004 study from Cornell found that office workers working at 68 degrees or less were more likely to make typing errors. The study also asserts that the optimal temperature at work ranges from 70 to 77 degrees.

Now, go ahead and tell Steve over in accounting to stop turning your office into North Pole.

Use aromatherapy

Currently loving your air diffuser at home? You may want to have something like that in your office too. We especially recommend pine or lemon or rosemary essential oils. Why those three? That's because pine scent can boost energy, citrus scents reduce stress and improve focus, while rosemary lets you think more clearly and improve your memory.

Also, it will feel extra cozy and will make you happier while working. And who doesn't want that?

Try: Majestic Pure Lemon Oil, $15.98

Put on jazzy music

If you have a work playlist, try adding some jazz music to the mix — it's cozy as hell and will give you coffee shop vibes. You may also listen to white noise such as rain sounds, as it can help you stay focused and on task.

Try: Spotify Coffee Table Jazz
