Skin care tips for your pits

Underarm maintenance is just a boring fact of life. (OK, some folks may choose to eschew the daily routines of shaving and deodorant, but many of us don't). But have you ever thought about jazzing up your routine? We're not saying you have to do a full-on 10-step skin care routine like you may or may not do for your face, but there are certain steps you can take to ensure your pits are happy. Keep reading for a few quick tips on how to step up your underarm game.

Exfoliate regularly
Just like the rest of our body, our underarms need exfoliation. Dead skin cells and product buildup from deodorant can actually cause ingrown hairs and even discoloration and hyperpigmentation. Exfoliating regularly will help keep these afflictions at bay, as well as making your underarms smooth and soft. Keep your eye out for a gentle exfoliant that'll condition the skin and keep it moisturized, like Lush Buche de Noel Face and Body Cleanser, $12.95.

Always shave in the shower
The skin on your armpits is sensitive, so care should be taken when shaving. Shaving in the shower with warm water will help soften the hair to make removal easier and a good shaving cream will ensure a smooth shave and reduce irritation. We like EOS Ultra Moisturizing Shave Cream, $3.99, which is packed with natural conditioning oils, shea butter and vitamins E and C for major hydration. It also helps to use a fresh razor as dull blades can cause nicks and razor bumps.

Use a primer
Yep, underarm primers are a thing. A primer will help detoxify your pits, balance your skin's pH and prep them for deodorant. Witch hazel is an effective and affordable primer option since it has antibacterial properties. You can also search for other primers made with natural ingredients, like Meow Meow Tweet Underarm Primer, $22.

Try natural deodorants
Most underarm products are made with synthetic chemicals and ingredients that can harm your skin. While antiperspirants prevent you from sweating, you may want to consider using a deodorant instead. After all, it's not the sweat itself that causes body odor, but the bacteria that is present in our pits. We're fans of the skin-loving Origins No Offense Alcohol and Aluminum Free Deodorant, $19.
