Sun Sensitivity in Winter

Retinol typically comes with a warning about increased sensitivity to sun exposure, and that still applies on bleak winter days — even more so in warmer parts of the world or at higher altitudes (hello skiing). Van Dyke says that retinols should be applied in the evening. Again, start with a lower strength and gradually increase usage.

Use Sunscreen to Prevent Sun Damage

Wesley points out that sun sensitivity becomes less of an issue once skin has gotten used to regular retinol usage. The risk is highest when skin has recently peeled from retinol use or if the UV light index is very elevated. Nevertheless, it's still important to use sun protection daily to prevent sun damage, even in the winter months. Keep skin protected and hydrated with a product like the Rodan + Fields Redefine Triple Defense Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30, $90.
