13 Costume Ideas for Halloween 2015 -- and How to Pull Them Off

DIY tips on what you need to become your favorite characters -- real and fictional -- this Halloween

Cookie Lyon from 'Empire'
Cookie's style is all about opulence, so dressing up as her for Halloween will give you the chance to pile on your fiercest gear. Leopard printed, body-skimming dress? Check. (Faux) Fur coat? Check. Sky-high pumps? Check. When it comes to Cookie's style and attitude, more is more. This is one Lyon that will roar loud enough to turn heads at any Halloween party.

Joy from 'Inside Out'
The hotly anticipated Pixar release brought us Amy Poehler as the (perfectly-cast) voice of Joy. To pull off the upbeat character's pretty pixie cut, you could reach for a wig or convert your existing 'do into a faux pixie.

But whether you're pinning up long locks or working with an existing short cut, you can achieve Joy's signature blue hair color with a few swipes of a hair chalk product, such as Kevin Murphy's Color Bug.

Reach for a bright yellow liner such as Inglot's Matte Collection AMC Eyeliner Gel in 84 -- a notice-me neon shade -- as a nod to Joy's glowing aura. Finish off your costume with a fit-and-flare green floral dress and your look will have you jumping for -- wait for it -- joy.

Kimmy Schmidt from 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt'
Naturally upbeat folks can't go wrong with Ellie Kemper's eternally optimistic Kimmy Schmidt character, who just can't seem to stop smiling despite the fact that she's been locked in an underground bunker for years. Recreate Kimmy's signature colorful getup by reaching for hot pink skinny jeans, a flowered button-up, bejeweled high-top sneakers, and the clincher -- her sunshine yellow cardigan with butterfly patches. Points if you've got the ginger waves (real or fake) to complete the look.

Imperator Furiosa from 'Mad Max'
For a clever way to recreate Furiosa's gritty, dirty look, apply coffee grounds or GlamGlow's YouthMud Tinglexfoliate Treatment on your forehead. If you're not planning on shaving your head à la Charlize Theron just for Halloween, you could always wear a black stocking or bathing cap to mimic her look. Dark-haired gals also have the option of simply slicking their hair back to create a buzzed effect. As for your outfit, give a torn-and-tattered tee a second life, and stack on some belts.

The Chanels from 'Scream Queens'
If you're stepping out with a squad this Halloween you can't go wrong with channeling the Chanels -- the sassy group of sorority sisters from "Scream Queens." Emma Roberts' character leads the clique, whose members only get numerical identities.

Recreate the girls' wardrobes by reaching for pastels, faux fur, feathers, and plenty of flashy baubles. Chanel #3 will need earmuffs because she's never without a pair of some sort -- fluffy, bejeweled, or whatever the occasion calls for. One of Roberts' best fashion moments comes in the form of a faux-fur vest from Brit brand Shrimps, and if you're lucky enough to own a Chanel bag, it will lend the perfect touch of authenticity to the Kappa president's wardrobe -- she calls Karl Lagerfeld "Uncle," after all.

And for the girl in your squad who would never wear anything fluffy or pink, there's newbie Grace, who tends to gravitate towards ripped jeans, varsity-inspired sweaters, and an inexplicable penchant for newsboy caps.
