What You Really Need to Know About the Chemicals in Your Nail Polish

Are non-toxic nail polishes all they're cracked up to be? Here's what you need to know

5-Free Nail Polish
Add formaldehyde resin and camphor to the list of off-limit substances in five-free polishes. Many nail products that used to be three-free upgraded their status to exclude these two ingredients, both of which are allergens for some people. The Environmental Working Group's cosmetic database lists them between a moderate and low health risk, though, so upgrading is completely optional.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics is known for their pigmented colors, and this sea foam, minty green is no exception to their typical bold, unexpected palette. With enough green to make it feel edgy rather than Easter egg-y, this bright color will coat nails through summer and beyond.

Julep Nail Color, Adventurous Aquarius, $14
An all-new zodiac collection is debuting at Julep, but here's the catch: They're releasing it month by month. Never have we been so eager to read our horoscopes. Aquarius and Pisces are out so far, and they look appropriately mystical.

Zoya Nail Polish in Jill, $10
Zoya's Naturel 3 line is a reimagined version of typical nudes. This muted mauve is right in the middle of the pack, and is an any time, any place kind of pink that feels fresh and modern.

7-Free Nail Polish
When five-free just isn't enough, that's where the seven-free polishes step up to the plate. Ethyl tosylamide, an ingredient banned in Europe, and xylene, a chemical that can cause all kinds of organ toxicity when used in large quantities, are given the heave-ho in seven-free polishes. But here's where it gets tricky: Most conventional polishes don't contain xylene anymore, whether they tout it or not.
