The Amazing Beauty Breakthroughs You Haven't Heard About … Yet

A game-changing anti-aging antioxidant that's still in the lab, the acne treatment that's also good for your gut and more incredible beauty breakthroughs on the horizon

The New Multitasker
BB creams continue to dominate the skin care-meets-makeup hybrid category. And last month, Jergens launched the biggest BB spinoff since CC cream: Jergens BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream, $12.99. It has all of the multitasking benefits of a BB for face (skin firming and brightening) with just a hint of color that won't rub off on clothes. I've heard rumors that other brands are feverishly working on their own versions, so it's only a matter of time before more body BBs hit shelves.

The New Snail Slime
Snail slime and snake venom are just two of the icky animal treatments that crept up in recent years. And if scientists at Utah State University get their way, synthetic spider silk will be the ingredient we're all talking about in 2015. Researchers have been perfecting a formula that, they say, moisturizes the skin and leaves behind a -- no surprise here -- silky feeling. USU scientists are so confident in their discovery, they're opening a Spider Silk Lab in Spring 2014, and they'll be marketing the ingredient to cosmetics companies soon thereafter.

The New Selfie
Selfies -- they're not just for Instagram anymore. Now you can snap a picture and use it to get a beauty consultation through your smartphone. Hair color company Madison Reed has online hair color-matching technology. Simply upload a photo of your hair color, and it will recommend a shade that's perfect for you -- goodbye grays. And if you have trouble while you're coloring, you can connect to a consultant through the Madison Reed app. The company is even testing a program in San Francisco where an on-call colorist shows up at your door.

The New Trouble Spot
Liposuction and fat-blasting lasers are old news. Doctors are now using ultrasound technology to target specific areas of fat. While it's approved for the stomach, New York City dermatologist Cheryl Karcher, MD, has her sights set on a different troublesome area: bra fat (the bulge that forms under or over the back of your bra). She's currently working on a study at her practice, and has seen great results -- patients losing more than an inch -- with just one treatment. Next up: FDA approval.

Snail slime facials and BB creams are so 2013. The new beauty trends for 2014 are so cutting edge, many aren't even available yet. You'll definitely want to keep an eye out for these technologies when they appear later this year, in 2015 and beyond.

The biggest beauty breakthroughs include skin care developments like probiotics to treat acne (dermatologists are definitely getting on board), artificial spider silk and the brand new antioxidant, Tiron. In the hair care world, there's a company that analyzes and recommends an at-home hair color based on a photo you take with your smartphone. And in body care, it's all about the BB cream -- they have even more great ingredients than the BB you use on your face.

Be the first to try one of these amazing new beauty trends for 2014, and we'll let keep you posted when the other beauty breakthroughs are headed to a store near you.
