Pretty as a Picture: Art Made Entirely of Makeup

Faces make great canvases, but these creations give the term "makeup artist" a whole new meaning

We can all agree that creating symmetrical cat eyes and coloring your lipstick inside the lines takes a steady hand and some finesse, but some artists are taking makeup to a whole new level of inventiveness. They're trading in their oils and pastels for mascara and lip gloss, and creating full-blown works of art on canvases (that are not faces.)

We knew our favorite products could give us wide-awake eyes, but we didn't quite imagine these same tools could yield stunning works of high-end art.

Get your M.A.C. on
Portrait artist Jason Mecier is known for his eclectic mosaics of celebrities that are made out of everything from noodles to yarn, but we're especially impressed by this portrait of Missy Elliott made entirely out of makeup products from M.A.C. compacts to Chanel lipstick.

Sweet, sweet fantasy
Jason Mecier continues his musician theme with a 100 percent makeup mosaic of Mariah Carey, complete with Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Color, $24, and expertly placed blush.

The world's most time consuming selfie
Budding visual artist Jennifer Ortiz didn't want to produce just any other mixed media self-portrait so she reached for ... Q-tips. To continue on her theme of avoiding standard art supplies, she dyed all 2,500+ of them with natural dyes like chocolate, apple juice and cinnamon.

Any way you slice it
The creatives at stylist.co.uk used slices of vivid lipsticks from Guerlain, Nars, Sleek, Ilamasqua, Shu Umera and Lancome to recreate Damien Hirst's "Zinc Sulfate".
