Apply brown eyeshadow to the entire eyelid, using a fluffy brush to blend up just above the crease. "If you're doubting your makeup skills at this point, you're doing it right," says Ravndahl, who explains the rocker smoky eye basically looks like a mess until you get to the final product.

After you've applied the brown eyeshadow (pictured is a matte brown shadow from the Coastal Scents 28 Neutral Palette), go over it with some black eyeshadow, blending just above the crease but just under where the brown was blended up to. Ravndahl uses MAC Eye Shadow in Carbon.

Layer Up
Next, use your fluffy brush to blend all of the outer edges and to layer more brown eyeshadow for depth.
