The Rocker Smoky Eye
Samantha Ravndahl, the other half of Bat a Lash Beauty, wants you to have fun with this look. In other words -- if it's not perfect, you're doing it right. "This look is SUPPOSED to be a little smudgy, a little dirty looking -- so if you can sleep in it first or get wasted, all the better. You'll look like a badass in no time."

Start the look by applying eyeshadow primer and a base shadow (Ravndahl uses MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Bare Study) to your entire lid. Next, use a brown eyeshadow (about two shades darker than your skin tone) and apply where the dotted image shows. The shading will make your brow bone appear stronger.

Walk the Line
Use a smudger brush or a small angled brush to apply gel eyeliner, such as MAC Fluidline, to the lower lashline. Extend the eyeliner out past the corner of your eye, flicking upward.

Smoke & Smudge
Blend your eyeliner out as much as you'd like, creating a soft blurred effect. You can also use a pencil brush to apply additional gel liner in between all your lower lashes.

Mess It Up
Using either your shader brush or the pencil brush, line your upper lashline, stopping before you get to the inner corner of your eye. "Again, no one cares if it's messy."

Blend, Blend, Blend
Let your gel liner sit for a bit so it has time to dry, then use the pencil brush to blend the liner out. Now you can blend the liner from your upper lashline down into the inner corner of your eye.

Smoky eye makeup is a standard look for a night out, a special occasion, or hey, just because you're feeling sexy. However there's a fine line between a masterfully smudged and blurred smoky eye and an eye makeup look that's simply a mess.

Angela Grigoryan and Samantha Ravndahl, the beauty bloggers and freelance makeup artists behind Bat a Lash Beauty, break down two smoky eye looks step-by-step so you can get it just right. After you've mastered the basic smoky eye, move on the a whole other level -- the rocker smoky eye. You'll be a pro in no time.
