How to Get Rid of Your Acne for Good

With these tips, banishing breakouts is so much easier than you imagined

Switch Your Styling Products
If breakouts cluster at your hairline, your hair products may be mucking up your skin. Many styling products contain oils and silicones that can clog pores and cause pimples. Check the ingredient lists (look for anything that ends in -cone like silicone, and mineral oil is a big red flag) and consider swapping them out for better-for-your-skin ingredients -- like aloe, honey or shea butter.

If you can't part with your products, keep them away from your skin and scalp. Apply creams and serums from the mid-shaft down, and put a towel over your face when you use a spray. At night, sleep with your hair wrapped in a scarf. And when you're taking a shower, always wash your face after you wash and condition your hair -- this way, hair product residue won't be left on your skin.

Sanitize Your Smart Phone
Your cell phone lives in your handbag (which, research shows, is even germier than a toilet seat). You also touch it all day, even when your hands aren't clean. So chances are, your phone is probably pretty grimy. When you press that bacteria-infested phone against your cheek for long periods of time … you guessed it: breakout central. Use a wipe to clean your phone before you chat -- or use earphones or a headset. You may look dorky, but your face will thank you.

Your Daily Must-Do: Make Time to De-stress
Anyone who's ever gotten a giant zit the day of a job interview, test or (ugh) her wedding understands that there's a link between stress and acne. And the connection is clear for dermatologists, as well: Stress increases levels of the hormone cortisol, which leads to breakouts. The best way to keep your cortisol levels in check is to relax. Go for a walk. Meditate. Go to bed early. Exercise. Hang out with friends. Hey, you can even use your skin as an excuse to plan a vacation. Figure out what works for you and do it daily.
