How to Not Be a Hot Mess at Essence Fest

Whether you're making your way to NOLA for Essence or planning a trip to the hot, humid south, keep these beauty basics in mind

Cooling Lip Color
If bar hopping with several clutches and tiny wallets has taught me anything, it's that less baggage is always more. When bringing your makeup means eyeshadow palette, blush/bronzer duo, lipstick, lip balm and lip gloss, it's time to start thinking about multi-taskers. The Aveda Nourish-Mint Smoothing Lip Color, $16, combines a soothing lip balm with a summer-appropriate color. The result is a vibrant shade that stays put all day long.

Waterproof Eyes
The only exception to your summer-y, no-makeup makeup look? Your eyes. To keep them looking full and defined (and keep product from running down your face), try Maybelline Volume Express The Rocket Waterproof Mascara, $5.94. The sweat-proof formula keeps your lashes looking beautiful even when it's sweltering hot.

Long-lasting Body Moisturizer
Another multi-tasking product you'll love? This Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 15, $10.99. It'll give your body a natural glow and it provides broad-spectrum sun protection.

Hairstyling Transition
If you want a low maintenance way to throw your hair up as the day goes on, these products do the job. The Goodie Spin Pin, $6.49, works great for quick top knots without the need for an elastic. Or you can try a Goody Ouchless Headband, $3.49, for a casual, pulled-back style that's still stylish.

If-You-Must Makeup
Tinted moisturizer and mascara not enough for you? Well if you must add a little something more, try a pop of color on your cheeks. This Mac Powder Blush, $21, will keep your cheeks rosy all day without seeming too dramatic.

Some of my favorite things about festival season -- besides being able to wear crazy prints, trendy crop tops, boho headbands ... and not look insane -- is keeping my makeup to a minimum. Warm weather and full-blown makeup just doesn't mix. Sweaty, drippy, streak-ridden foundation is never sexy and a hairstyle that requires constant fixing (while you're still dripping sweat) is never a good look. That's why creating a happy balance between what's essential and what's excessive is key.

The thing is, when the music kicks in and the crowds are moving, you want to look great but not too done-up, like some out-of-place diva. Sure music festivals are all about enjoying the entire experience -- the food, the music, the people, the celebs, and the sun. But the key is doing it all and still looking good.

This week, we're zeroing in on the beauty essentials for Essence Music Festival in New Orleans -- ground zero for blazing-hot, humid, and sticky-wet weather. We've covered all the beauty basics. Whether it's the beauty products you need to keep your frizz in check or the waterproof formulas that will keep your makeup from flowing like the Mississippi River, we found the best products to help you survive in style.

Forget your studio makeup bag and stick with the basics. Beating the heat has never been so beautiful.
