Gorgeous Bangs for Every Face Shape

Get the most bang for your buck with these styles that will flatter your face shape

Rashida Jones: Heart
The proof is in the styling: Rashida Jones shows that women with fine hair can wear bangs. Just keep them wispy and piece-y to prevent them from looking plastered to your forehead. Bonus: Soft, wispy bangs draw attention to your eyes and away from your chin, flattering a heart shaped face. They also flatter a round face by letting some of the forehead peek through, which adds length.

Ashley Madewke: Oval
If you have an oval shaped face, you're incredibly lucky: pretty much any style of bang will work for you. Just shy of being layers, Ashley Madekwe's long, side swept bangs are perfect for someone who wants to try out bangs without committing to eyebrow-grazing fringe. And, even better, the shape is flattering on everyone.

Jessica Biel: Long
Jessica Biel's bangs may not be as risky as, say, Katy Perry's, but the softer iteration of blunt bangs is pretty and on-trend. It works on her long face by covering her forehead, shortening her face and giving the illusion of width. This is a great "starter fringe" for people on the fence about straight-across bangs, and would also work on someone with a heart face shape because it softens a pointed chin.

Lea Michele: Square
The "Glee" actress' bangs are longest at the sides and shortest in the middle, creating a flattering tapered shape that softens her jaw line. Tapered fringe also looks great on round faces because it gives the illusion of extra length.

Carly Rae Jepson: Oval
If you're feeling daring and have an oval shaped face, this style is for you. Bangs that start further back on the head, like Carly's, create a big, statement-making fringe. This is the kind of cut you get when a) you've had bangs for a while want something even bolder, or b) you're reinventing yourself post-breakup or layoff.

Raise your hand if you've ever felt personally victimized by bad bangs. Oh, everyone? My very own bad bang story goes back to high school, when too-short and too-blunt bangs made my round face look even wider. It was then that I swore off bangs forever. Fast forward a few years later, and the high rise of celebrities getting bangs convinced me I needed to try again ... with a shape that was more flattering to my face. Voila! With soft, side swept fringe my face magically looked slimmer.

On the fence about fringe? You just need to find the most flattering style for your face shape. The right bang can soften a pointed chin, even out wide cheeks and make a long face look more balanced. Here's the down 'n' dirty way to figure out your face shape:

*Oval: Your face will be longer than it is wide, with a forehead that is slightly wider than your chin.
*Square: Is your jaw line the same width as your hairline? Do you also have a prominent jaw line? Then this is your face shape.
*Long: This face shape is longer than it is wide, with a narrow chin.
*Heart: A long, narrow jaw line and pointed chin characterize this face shape.
*Round: If the length and width of your face are the same, this is your face shape.
