Gorgeous Bangs for Every Face Shape

Get the most bang for your buck with these styles that will flatter your face shape

Solange Knowles: Oval
Solange Knowles proves you can keep your hair curly and have bangs too. The shorter bangs balance her natural hairstyle and would add softness to any face shape.

Taylor Swift: Heart
Taylor Swift never does anything halfway (see: sparkly red carpet proof), so it was no surprise that when she got bangs, she got bangs. Walking the line between blunt and choppy, her slightly-longer-than-lash-length fringe creates a sultry frame for her eyes. Bonus: you can be a little less vigilant about brow maintenance with these bangs.

Krysten Ritter: Oval
While long, blunt bangs make a statement, Krysten Ritter's baby bangs show you can do a shorter style. This style works best on an angular face. While bangs are already notoriously high maintenance, this style will take a little more work -- expect to trim them every couple of weeks.

Christina Ricci: Heart
These bangs are a compromise between short bangs (think Katy Perry) and longer, side-swept bangs (a la Amber Riley). Instead of sweeping to the side, they get longer at a precise angle, which balances the blunt cut of a bob and visually draws interest away from her chin, which balances out her face.

Dita Von Teese: Oval
The burlesque dancer channels iconic pin-up girl Bettie Page with her short, retro bangs. The length really makes a statement when paired with a deep, rich hair color.

Raise your hand if you've ever felt personally victimized by bad bangs. Oh, everyone? My very own bad bang story goes back to high school, when too-short and too-blunt bangs made my round face look even wider. It was then that I swore off bangs forever. Fast forward a few years later, and the high rise of celebrities getting bangs convinced me I needed to try again ... with a shape that was more flattering to my face. Voila! With soft, side swept fringe my face magically looked slimmer.

On the fence about fringe? You just need to find the most flattering style for your face shape. The right bang can soften a pointed chin, even out wide cheeks and make a long face look more balanced. Here's the down 'n' dirty way to figure out your face shape:

*Oval: Your face will be longer than it is wide, with a forehead that is slightly wider than your chin.
*Square: Is your jaw line the same width as your hairline? Do you also have a prominent jaw line? Then this is your face shape.
*Long: This face shape is longer than it is wide, with a narrow chin.
*Heart: A long, narrow jaw line and pointed chin characterize this face shape.
*Round: If the length and width of your face are the same, this is your face shape.
