When a season — and all the environmental aggressors that come with it — changes, so too must our approach to hair care. "I always suggest my clients evolve their hair through the four seasons and through personal changes," says Joel Warren, owner of The Salon Project. It's not just the structure of hair that needs attention, however. "Clients must protect their color investments. The products my clients use depend on what color hair they have and what season they have that color in. If you live in a place with four distinct seasons, each season we're doing very different things with hair."

Warren singles out Shu Uemura Color Lustre Shampoo, $49, as a must-have for color maintenance and to maximize color vibrancy. "In the winter months, we tend to see drier, flakey scalps. Once a week I also recommend my clients use a scalp scrub like Oribe Serene Scalp Exfoliating Scrub, $52, or Kerastase Scrub Apaisant Soothing Scalp Scrub, $50. These scrubs gently polish the scalp with exfoliants to remove oil, dirt, and product buildup that can lead to an increase of the appearance of flakes. We all talk about our skin going dry in the fall and winter, hydration does not only apply to your skin, but to your hair as well."

Curly hair can be particularly problematic as air dries up. "Do not over-style or over-process your hair this winter. We're in the year of 'natural hair' and the diffuser is back! I love Vicious Curls Curl Lock Gel, $12, to tame hair and curls, naturally." Lastly, since we're spending more time at home, Warren suggests self-care this season with hair masks like the Moroccan Gold Series Truffle Mask, $44.

Dropping temperatures, dry air and blasting heaters means one thing nearly for certain: frizzy, parched strands. That's where this investment piece comes in. When you do a side-by-side comparison with competitors you might not see a difference with your naked eye, but millions invested in research and prototypes means that the process to getting smooth hair is a lot, well, smoother.

The Corrale is designed to distribute heat evenly so you'll need less pass throughs to get perfectly straight, frizz-free hair — this is especially meaningful for those with curly hair or for those with little time to heat style — as it means significantly less damage to hair (Dyson claims 50 percent less damage).
