We all know breakouts aren't limited to your face. Your back, chest, arms — and even your bum — are susceptible. In such cases, a body wash that treats acne is the way to go.
"Neutrogena's Acne Wash is a fabulous product that helps eliminate acne on the back, and chest, as well as the face," says Dr. Joyce Davis, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. "I recommend using it daily to degrease your skin, help eliminate blackheads, and prevent new ones from forming. You are essentially getting a mild, daily salicylic acid peel."
One of the most common mistakes people make when trying to treat acne is focusing on drying out the skin and basically "beating" it into submission. Moisture is essential, and a lightweight, water-based option is ideal for oily skin.
"When it comes to moisturizers, you want to stay away from ones that use heavy oils," notes Dr. Chimento. "Neutrogena's Hydro Boost is oil-free and water-based, so it feels extremely lightweight on the skin and does not cause any breakouts. Its main ingredient, hyaluronic acid, helps enrich the outer layer of the skin by holding onto any moisture, giving it a heavy dose of hydration."
"This oil-free moisturizer is great because it contains ceramides, niacinamide, glycerin, and prebiotic thermal water to help maintain the skin's microbiome," says Dr. Nadia Kihiczak, a board-certified dermatologist at NYC's Spring Street Dermatology. She adds that if you're using other topical acne medications or serums, this should be your final step.
Differin Gel is the only prescription-strength retinoid product that's available over the counter, and it's commonly recommended by dermatologists to those struggling with acne. Both Davis and Dr. Chimento highly recommended picking up a tube.
"Integrating retinoids in your skincare routine is essential for preventing breakouts and cystic acne by targeting clogged pores and inflammation," Dr. Chimento says. "While most retinol can be very potent, Differin Gel uses the retinoid adapalene, which is much gentler on the skin and can be used morning and night. After a few weeks of consistent use, you will find improvement in your skin's texture and appearance."
"Benzoyl peroxide is a powerful medicine that can dry a large pus-containing pimple or a deep, red cyst in just a few days. If you need full-strength acne busting medication and don't want to have to visit your dermatologist, this medication will help you," says Dr. Davis. "The 10 percent is maximum strength and ideal for oily skin, but 5 percent or 2.5 percent strengths are also available and are less potent for more delicate skin." This product should not be combined with retinoids, vitamin C, or AHAs. If you want to use them, alternate every other day or morning/evening.
