I'm Officially Obsessed With This At-Home Teeth Whitener

This at-home teeth whitener actually WORKS

There are very few people out there with perfectly white teeth, and for those who don't fall into that category, you're probably wondering how the heck you can get a whiter smile... without dropping hundreds of dollars at the dentist, that is.

I was able to test out the Colgate Optic White Advanced LED Whitening Treatment, $185, and it totally lived up to its claims. The best part? It cost less than my monthly car insurance, takes hardly ANY time, and could be done in the comfort of my own home (while binge-watching "The Bachelor," of course).

The Device
Colgate has multiple at-home teeth whitener options, but this one — in my opinion — is truly the most efficient in many ways. After all, this device and treatment combination is designed to be enamel-safe and it's clinically proven to turn your teeth six shades whiter in just ten days. (Now, pick your jaw up off the floor.)

Anyway, the kit includes the device, a 10-day treatment, and a charging case — and that's literally all you need to have it work its magic. The overall product has over 80 patents globally from the development of the device and its design to the compact, rechargeable case!

The Process
The ease of this whitening system is really what drew me to try it. "What makes this product unique is the combination of its performance and ease of use," says John Kooyman, Chief Marketing Officer, Colgate-Palmolive, "Many at-home whiteners are cumbersome, complicated or ineffective, but with our introduction, we bring to the market a product that is both easy to use and highly effective."

When I tested out the product, I started by fully charging the device (I only charged it once throughout the 10-day process, so yay for great battery life!). After it was ready to go, I opened Day 1 of the serum and loaded it onto the top and bottom trays of the device. Thankfully, the serum is thick enough that you're able to flip it upside-down to get the serum onto the opposite side so it can coat the top and bottom rows of teeth.

Once the serum was lined in the device, I popped it in my mouth, hit the start button and hung out for 10 minutes. I usually put the device into place and then checked my emails in the morning, and before I knew it, the buzzer would go off! Once I was finished with the process, I rinsed my mouth quickly with water and then quickly rinsed the leftover serum off the device, and that. is. it.

I repeated this quick and easy process for 10 days straight and was shocked at the results. My teeth started to look whiter after the first couple of days, but by the end of the process, I felt like a new person. Another thing worth noting: As someone with semi-sensitive teeth, I did not feel any sensitivity even on day ten, which I was quite impressed with.

The Science
The device uses patented technology that includes over 700 blue lights at various, specific wavelengths to help get your teeth whiter, quicker. It's very similar to what you'd see in a professional office that offers teeth whitening, but you don't even have to leave the couch to get these results. It's even able to remove decades of wine and coffee stains (hi, me!).

The high amount of blue lights happening all at once helps the device work quicker, so you're able to finish each day's process in 10 minutes. The non-UV blue light level accelerates the whitening power of the 9 percent hydrogen peroxide (the same whitening ingredient used by dentists) by 190 percent.

The Nitty-Gritty
The Colgate Optic White Advanced LED Whitening Treatment is available for $185 — which sounds like a lot, but it's actually a small portion of the price you'd normally pay the dentist to whiten your teeth six shades.

The innovative kit includes the device, a 10 day treatment, and a charging case. Colgate also offers subscription options for those interested in keeping up with the whitening! Most people repeat the cycle every three months — note that if you do this, you only need to repurchase the serum, not the entire device.
