"Personally I like the look with lighter liners or right up against skin," says Williams. "If you have too dark of a liner or shadow near the lash line you will lose the look." For an edgy but wearable look, she recommends lining your eyes with white or pink to really bring out the contrast (bonus: it works on all skin tones).

Try: Lancome Grandiose Mascara, $32. This gives lashes a great, fat, glossy look, says Williams. The bent wand also makes it incredibly easy to grab even the tiniest lashes, and works especially well on the inner and outer corners.

While clumpy, spiky mascara looks great on its own, it can also be paired with smudged black liner for a sexy grunge appeal.

Try: Kevyn Aucoin The Volume Mascara, $28. This mascara has gained cult status for its volumizing properties and easy removal -- simply keep layering it on until you achieve the level of clumpiness you desire. And, since it's a tubing mascara, it comes off with just a bit of warm water -- no harsh eye makeup removers required.
