You Really Need (OK, Want) These Makeup Brushes

See how one or two new brushes can completely make over your makeup routine

The multi-purpose eye shadow brush
General rule of thumb: when looking for an all-over shadow brush, look for one with soft, densely packed bristles, like this one from Make Up For Ever, to make sure your shadow goes on smoothly and evenly. Use this multitasking brush to swipe shadow all over lid, get highlighter precisely in the inner crease of your eye, or to smudge liner for a softer look. You can multi-purpose the brush and get concealer directly on tiny blemishes, or use it to outline lips with highlighter -- just be sure to clean it before putting it near your eyes.

The angled brush for a runway-worthy cat eye
I always toss the sponge-tipped applicators that come with eye shadow palettes, but I had to use this angled liner brush from the LORAC Pro To Go Palette for a spur of the moment cat eye ... and now I can't live without it. The little bristles work great with gel liner or eye shadow. Use short strokes to create a straight line, and get as close to your lash line as possible to make lashes look fuller. Look for a thin, firm, densely packed angled liner brush. This type of brush allows you to start with a thin line and flesh it out it if you want to go bold.

The brush for a bold red lip
Some people are blessed with the ability to apply lipstick straight from the tube. If you don't fall into that category, consider a lip brush, like the EcoTools Detailed Lip Brush your new BFF. Use short, vertical strokes to ensure the most accurate application and prevent lipstick from building up in the creases of your lips. To make your lip color last, pat translucent powder over lipstick in between coats.

Here's the ugly truth about makeup for most of us: you can spend a fortune on the best products, but if you're using the wrong tools to apply it, your makeup will never have the flawless look you expect from a $75 foundation. I had this epiphany recently. I was wandering through Sephora (because it's my happy place) and there it was: the giant display of makeup brushes. The one that takes up an entire row; the one I usually walk right past. But I've had profound doubts about my makeup lately, so I stopped to browse. What, exactly, does a Brush #57 do? Is that funny egg-shaped sponge worth a few bucks?

I'm not prone to hyperbole, so I won't say the teeny concealer blending brush (a.k.a. #57) I bought changed my life, but I will say the blending and coverage it offers is 10 times better than anything I've ever done with my fingers or the little flat brush I used before, and I was using the same exact concealer I've always used. Little 'ol #57 changed my entire view on makeup brushes and kick-started this foray into discovering the other brushes I've been missing out on. If you're looking to update your makeup brush set, see how one or two new brushes and can make over your makeup routine.
