Road Test: 13 Long-Lasting Lipsticks, Ranked

We put these long-lasting lip colors through their paces to see how they held up against sandwiches, multiple cups of coffee and other everyday lipstick-mussing occurrences

Best Long-Lasting Lipstick No. 10: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lip Color, $24
Pros: Applies smooth and creamy, and comes in a range of to-die-for shades. Holds up well against beverages (but not so much against sandwiches), and when it does start to fade, it only fades in the inner part of your lips.

Cons: The vibrant colors, while gorgeous, show the most noticeable fading. At the end of the day, lips feel a bit dry.

Best Long-Lasting Lipstick No. 9: CoverGirl Outlast Longwear Lipstick, $8.49
Pros: The color is superpigmented, so even as it fades, the lipstick still looks good.

Cons: One editor noted that halfway through the day she would have done anything for some lip balm. If your lips are dry, the color will settle into the cracks by the end of the day (not a great look). The muted colors did not last as long as the brighter ones. Still, Mary's (pictured) faded to a pretty, natural-looking tint.

Best Long-Lasting Lipstick No. 8: Revlon ColorStay Overtime Lipcolor, $10.49
Pros: Application is a breeze, and the color doesn't transfer onto coffee mugs or water bottles. When the color does begin to fade, it does so evenly and turns into a pretty lip stain.

Cons: The lip color is a little drying, but that can be fixed with a few swipes of the clear gloss.

Best Long-Lasting Lipstick No. 7: Nars Audacious Lipstick, $32
Pros: The texture and the shape of the lipstick make it easy to get a supersharp application sans lip liner. And despite the semi-matte formula, it doesn't leave lips feeling dry at the end of the day -- in fact, testers didn't feel the urge to apply lip balm at all.

Cons: Lasts well through one meal, but if you plan on eating or drinking multiple times without touching up, by the end of the day this will fade.

Best Long-Lasting Lipstick No. 6: Dolce & Gabbana Dolce Matte Lipstick, $37
Pros: It's hard not to swoon over the smoldering shades of red in this collection (we're on a mission to collect them all). They apply like a dream, and never, ever leave lips feeling dried out or uncomfortable. Lipstick transfers a bit to coffee cups, but manages to stay intact throughout most of the day.

Cons: Without lip liner, color starts to bleed into fine lines after a few hours, especially with the vampier colors like Jill's (pictured). The brighter colors fared a bit better.

Claim: Opaque, full-coverage that perfectly defines lips

Hours before fading: 7
