9 Essential Tools for Curly Hair

Say no to knots, tangles and every other curl-related nuisance with these curly hair essentials

Wide-toothed comb
Best used for in-shower detangling, the wide-toothed comb is critical for anyone with curly hair. Once your conditioner is set, gently rake the comb through your curls to distribute the product evenly.

Diffuser
Think all diffusers were created equally? There are different types for different curls. If your curls are long and thick, choose a diffuser with a large base and finger picks that are long and wide apart. If your hair is shorter, choose one with a smaller base with longer fingers to create more volume.

Curl definer
The best curl definers and separators come in cream, gel, jelly or lotion formulas. Try Bumble and Bumble Curl Conscious Defining Creme, $29, Devacurl Ultra Defining Gel, $19, or Miss Jessie's Quick Curls, $32. Use as a daily treatment for a soft, definitive curl pattern.

Shine enhancer
On days when your curls need a little TLC but not a full-blown makeover, mist a shine serum spray, like Ouidad Shine Glaze Serum, $21, all over your hair to brighten dull curls.

Co-wash
"Conditioning wash" or co-washing is cleansing your hair without stripping away moisture. It's great for keeping curly hair soft and hydrated (but we don't recommend using it if your hair is chock full of product and needs a deep clean). Try a product like Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Cowashing Conditioning Cleanser, $11.99.

You know those curly hair commercials that preach to us about "embracing" our natural, kinky hair? The ones that make it look so easy to get those soft, shiny (never frizzy!), bouncy curls? As someone who has styled a head full of kinky-curly hair my entire life, I see those commercials and think the same thing: yeaaaah, right.

If you have wavy or curly hair, you know the truth: a lot of work goes in to keeping our curly hair in check. "High maintenance" doesn't even begin to describe the work that goes into curly styles -- it takes deep conditioning, setting, and diffusing, not to mention hydrating, moisturizing, and curl defining. And that's on a good day. When it's rainy or humid? Look out. I guarantee you, the phrase "bad hair day" was coined by a woman with curly hair on a hot, humid day.

Whether your hair has just a little frizzle or you have a full-blown explosion of kinks and spirals, we've gathered up the essential tools and products you need to help you in your tireless pursuit of curly hair perfection.
