The Hottest Beauty Trends for Spring 2014

Ripped straight from the runway, you can count on seeing these seven stunning looks come spring

Hair Accessory: Hair
Yep, the biggest hair accessory for spring is your own hair. At Libertine, hairstylist Akemi Tamaribuchi for Kérastase Paris created a low ponytail, secured it with a bungee, then wrapped a piece of hair around the elastic. The trick, Tamaribuchi said, is to backcomb the section you're using as the accessory. "Make sure the ponytail is flat at the nape of the neck," she said. "Then, use the backcombed piece to create a rough cuff around the hair." While the "hair around the elastic" trick is nothing new, this fluffy look is a cooler interpretation of the old style.

As a second hair-as-hair-accessory flourish, Tamaribuchi added small clip-in pieces of black hair on the sides of the ponytail.

Hairstyle: Low Ponytail
Mid-way through the madness, I sent this message back to my editor at Total Beauty: "So. Many. Low ponytails." And that was an understatement. They were everywhere, and in all variations, from teased and messy to straight and sleek. It doesn't get much easier than a ponytail, but can always stock up on the essentials, like Goody Ouchless Elastics, $4, and hairspray.

"This is a chic, elegant woman," said Odile Gilbert for Kérastase Paris. "The look is simple, but it's also graphic." While Gilbert used a half a dozen products to get the look, she says that Kérastase Gloss Appeal is the most crucial. It's a shine spray that doesn't leave behind any residue -- and it launches in October.

Lip Color: Orange
A bright lip has been a popular spring trend for a few seasons, but this is the first time traffic cone orange was such a unanimous choice. "Red is too pretty; pink is too sweet," said Revlon Global Artistic Director Gucci Westman backstage at Rag & Bone. "A neon orange lip is the right shade for a cool-girl look." Westman suggests pairing orange lipstick with soft clothes in muted colors. "The clothes in the collection are quite pastel, so the lips really pop," she said.

Unfortunately, this exact orange lipstick (Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Carnival) won't be available until Spring 2014. In the meantime, we recommend Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain in Orange De Chine, $34.

Eye Look: Just Mascara
Sure, there was blue shadow, turquoise liner, and smoky plum makeup backstage, but the eye look I'm most excited about is so much simpler and only requires one product: mascara. "It's all about lashes," said makeup artist Diane Kendall for Nars Cosmetics. "It's really fresh, young, and beautiful." To get the look, she used an eyelash curler followed by Nars Larger Than Life Lengthening Mascara, $25.

After so many seasons of wacky nail art and bold colors, sheer nail polish is a refreshing change for spring. "I'm seeing lots of sheer whites, nudes, and grays," said celebrity manicurist Jin Soon Choi. "It's clean, simple, and chic."

Choi recommends using only one coat of sheer polish if your nail beds are naturally white, and apply two coats if they're darker. Plus, there's no rule with shape or length when you're using a sheer color, she said. Although it's a minimalist look, don't toss your manicure kit quite yet. "It's a natural manicure, but nails will continue to be 'done,'" said MAC manicurist Marian Newman. "That's the biggest trend."

What's the best thing about the spring 2014 beauty trends I spotted backstage at New York Fashion Week? They're super simple. The overall theme I spotted: natural makeup (sometimes with a statement lip or major mascara), bare nails, and barely-done hair. So when you want to take a break from fall's deep, rich looks (think: punk eyeliner and berry lip stain), brush up on the hair, makeup, and nails you'll be wearing soon enough.
