SO stunning

Have you heard of "Beauty Is Boring" yet? Founded by Robin Black, it's a haven for brightly hued makeup looks and stunning portrait photography — all conceived of and shot by Black herself. Each look is unique, with its own artistic flair, ranging from a graphic flick of burgundy liquid liner to glossy tangerine lips paired with metallic royal blue shadow.

Black says she started her juggernaut of a site completely on a whim. "I wanted to keep my editorial skills up, so I started snapping Polaroids of makeup looks on friends," she says. She did her first shoot with model Charlotte Carey, who wanted to try bright blue eyeshadow. She originally intended the blog to be something she could share with friends and to keep herself motivated — but fast-forward several years and she has a cult following that includes 130,000 followers on Instagram.

A scroll down that aforementioned Instagram account reveals boundless creativity, seemingly born out of the same sense of whimsy as the site itself. "While some artists create mood boards or plan out face charts, I tend to be more spontaneous," explains Black. "I rarely choose a look before spending a bit of time with the model. Their personal style, vibe and taste often inspires me." Other than that, her inspiration comes from pretty much anywhere: "It might be a reflection of my mood that day, exciting new products that I can't wait to try, or a song that has just played."

We chose some of our favorite looks (and so did the artist herself) — keep reading to take a look at some of her greatest hits.
