Beauty Dare: NYFW Runway to Reality

Can we rip off a high-fashion runway look? Yes. We. Can.

Grown-Up Glitter
Everyone in the office let out a collective oooh when they saw the sparkly eye makeup and super-big, bird's nest hair from the Jenny Packham runway show. The complete look is a bit too avant-garde for, say, a day at the office or a Starbucks run (and our hair would never recover from that much teasing), so we challenged ourselves to create a wearable (but not watered-down) version of this high-fashion beauty look.

The Hair
Emily's hair is naturally straight with some slight texture. To make this style more wearable than the runway look, we used her subtle texture to our advantage, teasing only around the ends and sides of her hair. Here's how we did it:

1. Mist all of your hair with a heat protectant spray, like Herbal Essences Heat Protection Spray, $5.99

2. Using a 1-inch barrel curling iron, begin curling sections of your hair starting from the back. Be sure each section is only about one to two inches wide as you go.

3. As you curl each section, pin each piece in place at your roots. Mist each curl with hairspray to hold.

4. Continue curling and pinning the rest of your hair. Spritz entire head with hairspray and let the curls set for 15-20 minutes.

5. Unpin your curls and tug them apart to loosen them. Use a fine-toothed comb to tease at your nape and sides of your hair for added volume.

6. Create a side part then clip your hair off to the side using a flower accessory. Finish with hairspray.

The Makeup
Step 1: Prep your skin with moisturizer. Then apply foundation (we used Le Metier de Beaute Classic Flawless Finish Foundation SPF 8, $68) with a sponge to achieve a natural look.

Step 2: Apply an eye shadow primer (one of our favorites is LORAC Behind the Scenes Eye Shadow Primer, $21) all over the lid. Use your finger to pat on a shimmery eye shadow like NYX Roll On Shimmer, $4, in Platinum.

Step 3: Lightly brush away any extra glitter from underneath your eyes (tip: using a piece of Scotch tape helps pick up hard-to-clean glitter), then use a brightening concealer like Jane Iredale Active Light Concealer, $27, to cover any under-eye darkness.

Step 4: Apply an orangey cream blush to your cheekbones and blend well. (We couldn't find the perfect shade, so we multi-purposed Hard Candy All Glossed Up Lip Stain, $5, in Orange You Sweet as a blush. Clever!)

Step 5: Use your finger to blot on a pink lipstick -- we like Covergirl Lip Perfection, $5.99, in Darling -- to give the lips a natural looking tint.

Step 6: Sweep on a highlighting powder like Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush, $26, in Angelic over your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose and underneath the eyebrows to get that glowing-from-within skin. Apply the shimmer you used on your eyelids to the inner corners of your eyes to really make them pop.

Step 7: Give your look staying power by using a fluffy brush to apply a translucent powder all over your face.

Bold Brows and Braids at Rebecca Minkoff
If you're glued to the live streaming feed from New York Fashion Week 2013 like we are, you've probably fallen in love with a look or two over the last six days. One of our favorites: the bold brow, minimal makeup and trio of wrapped fishtail braids on models at the Rebecca Minkoff show. On first glance, it looks like you'd need a team of stylists (and possibly a hair engineer) to get the intricate braids and flawless makeup look. We love a good challenge, so we put it to the test -- can we rip this look from the runway and make it work in the office with just a few tools? Click to see how we fared with this beauty dare.

The Hair
We started with Frances' hair straight and smooth in order to achieve a whimsical, romantic look that's still polished.

Step 1: Create an exaggerated side part on one side of your head. From there, zig-zag the part vertically down the center all the way to the nape of your neck.

Step 2: Clip the hair on the side of your part off to the side. On the other side of your hair, create another zig-zag part horizontally from the top of your crown to behind your ear.

Step 3: Create two ponytails on either side of your new zig-zag part, securing at the root with a clear elastic. Start the first fishtail braid right above your ear at eye level and braid tightly from the root to the ends of your hair. Secure the end with a clear elastic. Repeat this braid on the second section of hair, starting at the nape of your neck and braiding to the ends.

Step 4: Unclip the other side of your hair. Create a third ponytail starting at the nape of your neck, securing at the root with a clear elastic. Again, tightly fishtail braid to the end and secure with a clear elastic.

Step 5: Tug on all three braids to loosen them, creating a messy, frizzy-like texture. Next, twist the braids at the base and wrap them over the front of your head about 2-3 inches from your hairline. Use multiple bobby pins to secure, then snip and remove the clear elastics (as desired).

Step 6: Tug on the style evenly to add a messy, unkempt look, then finish with a strong-hold hairspray like Sexy Hair Big Sexy Hair Spray & Stay Intense Hold Hairspray, $17.95.
