9 New Beauty Trends to Obsess Over

Peep the latest trends from our 2016 TotalBeauty Awards

Glow, Baby, Glow
Contouring is so two thousand and late. This year, it's all about achieving a natural-looking glow with strobing. (Check out our full strobing tutorial.)

Strobing is next-level highlighting that gives you a sculpted face by accenting the places where light naturally hits -- along the bridge of your nose, the tops of your cheekbones, your Cupid's bow, your forehead and your chin. The result: Ethereal skin that looks #blessed by Beyoncé herself.

This year, we had strong contenders in our highlight/contour category (the majority of which were highlighting products), and we awarded top honors to two highlighters that are simply beyond: Anastasia Beverly Hills Illuminator, $28 (winner) and Chosungah 22 24H Raybeam Up Cream, $28 (honorable mention).

Glow-inducing products won in other categories as well: Guerlain Météorites Base Perfecting Pearls, $74, won Best Primer because it made our skin glowier than we ever thought possible; CoverGirl TruBlend Blush, $9.24, won Best Blush because the marbled blend of colors gave us a radiant flush.

Laters, Traditional Shampoo
Forget your old wash, rinse, repeat routine. This year, we wanted more out of our shampoos and conditioners. Our Hair Breakthrough winner, Tresemmé Beauty-Full Volume Reverse System Shampoo and Conditioner, challenged everything we thought we knew about washing our hair. With this set, the conditioner is meant to be used first. Crazy, we know. But the system was designed with flat and fine hair in mind because conditioning second can leave your hair weighed down. By conditioning first and shampooing it away, you're left with fuller, bouncier hair that's still soft and silky.

Another category disrupting your basic shampoo routine? Cleansing conditioners. Kevin Murphy Re.Store Repairing Cleansing Treatment, $32, was our honorable mention Hair Breakthrough product because it somehow manages to get hair squeaky clean while leaving it completely soft and nourished, all in one step. Sub it in for your regular shampoo and conditioner and prepare to be amazed. You may find yourself reaching for it way more often than the recommended one to two times per week (we sure have).

Greasy Sunscreen Gets An Overhaul
Finding the right sunscreen can feel a little like Goldilocks (one's too greasy, another one clogs pores, etc). But this year, brands really stepped up their game with high-SPF sunscreens that feel lightweight and -- wait for it -- actually improve the look of your skin, immediately and over time.

If you make one splurge this year, make it on our Face Sunscreen SPF 30+ winner, Tatcha Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35, $68. Upon application it makes skin look smooth, poreless and matte --without a trace of greasiness or icky sunscreen smell -- and provides a perfect base for foundation.

Taking the honorable mention place is La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Oil-Free Dry Touch Sunscreen, $19.99. It's completely oil-free -- in fact, it absorbs oil -- leaving skin with a matte finish and protecting it from the sun with SPF 60 and a complex of antioxidants.

DIY Blowouts
If we had an unlimited hair budget and lots of free time, we'd be total barflies (Drybar's name for its patrons who have a membership). As it is, we're stuck blowing out our hair ourselves, achieving with less-than-Drybar-worthy results -- until these magic products crossed our desks.

Oribe Imperial Blowout Transformative Styling Crème, $69, won Best Style Enhancer for its ability to help even the least blow-dryer-savvy members of our team get amazing results in record time. It contains a special polymer that helps your style last for days, plus a skin-care-inspired blend of repairing ingredients.

It's no coincidence, then, that our runner up is another blowout-enhancer: Shu Uemura Straightforward Time-Saving Blow Dry Oil Spray, $39. Simply mist its formula (inspired by the way foundation glides onto skin) over sections of your hair, and get ready for supersilky, supersmooth strands.

Go Coconuts
The winners and honorable mentions in our Body Moisturizer and Body Wash categories all had one thing in common: Coconuts.

The sudsy, luxurious Victoria's Secret Coconut Milk Ultrarich Cream Wash, $18, and Aveeno Skin Relief Gentle Scent Body Wash Nourishing Coconut, $7.49 are delicately and deliciously scented with the tropical smell.

Our winners in the Body Moisturizer category are formulated with skin-softening coconut oil. Palmer's Coconut Oil Formula Coconut Oil Body Lotion, $7.39, contains both coconut oil and coconut milk for added nourishment, while Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream, $45, contains the superstar oil plus guarana and cupuacu butter to lift, firm and moisturize our skin.

In other words: This year we were coo-coo for coconuts.

We've spent countless hours (and a few sleepless nights) testing hundreds of new beauty products for our 2016 TotalBeauty Awards. And once the testing was completed, we spent even more hours locked in a conference room, battling it out for our favorite products. Now that the winners are announced, we'll let you in on a secret: Discovering the latest beauty trends is just as exciting as choosing the year's best mascara or breakthrough hair product. And now, we're letting you in on the seven hottest trends we saw. If these products aren't on your vanity already, they will be soon.
