For creating a slim hourglass shape, we look to our Victorian ancestors for guidance. "Don't be afraid of using a corset," says Cornwell, "I say 'corset,' and you immediately think of Rose from 'Titanic' getting yanked until she can barely breathe." But modern corsets aren't quite like that.

Cornwell says there are so many different kinds of corsets on the market today that you don't have to be scared to try one out (the Spanx Boostie-Yay! Comfy Corset is both flattering and comfortable).

"They really do lift the chest and shape the upper body, while also bringing in the waist and smoothing out the tummy," Cornwell says. "You definitely don't want to wear anything skimpy with a corset, because it will show through, but for ball gown type of look -- a wedding or special event -- it can work perfectly."

Before you begin your journey to underwear recovery, remember this one little nugget of advice from Nethero:

"Forget what you've heard about shapes and sizes," she says, "Women need to stop blaming their body, and start blaming their ill-fitting undies."
