What: Surfing is an awesome all-around workout ... just take a look at Karina Petroni or Malia Jones for reference. Surfset & Sand gives you the benefits of surfing, minus the ocean. You paddle, pop up and literally surf on a stabilized surfboard that moves back and forth like it's in the water. The class combines these surf sequences, with planks, pushups and other core work and strength training on the board. You also finish a sequence of toning exercises using a sandbag as both a free weight and a sliding disc. Don't worry, you won't need the balance of a prima ballerina or pro-surfer in order to take the class; the balance level is something similar to what's required in a Pilates class with a reformer, or a warrior sequence in yoga.

What: It's a classic spin class with a do-gooder twist: For every class you take, Cycle House donates two meals to the hungry. Cycle House is also eco-friendly: no printed schedules, receipts or bottled water enter this spin studio. (You can BYO bottle to fill from the studio's alkaline water filter system.) Fittingly, the bikes are green and the lights are dim. But they definitely don't skimp energy on the music -- expect a pumping soundtrack with a full-body spin routine.

What: "Dance Motivation Fitness" isn't your typical dance-based cardio workout. It's also a far cry from the standard "no pain, no gain" mantra of tough fitness instructors who bark commands, taunt, and push the boundaries to motivate. DMF instructors are all about the warm fuzzy (think: inspirational coaching), complimenting women on moves they do well and offering kind words encouragement. Each song -- which ranges from hip hop to salsa to pop -- has a choreographed sequence designed to pump up your heart rate, and the instructor's feel-good vibe really instills the full body-and-mind experience in each class.
