Sure, flowers are nice and a spa gift certificate or champagne brunch is a lovely idea, but this year Breanne, 20, decided to think outside the box. Instead of the usual gifts she spent the day with her mom, Kim, 50, getting their hair and makeup done.

Was it slightly selfish since she wound up with a fun makeover too? Maybe. Did Kim absolutely love the time spent together and her final look? Definitely. Did Total Beauty enjoy hooking these lovely ladies up with Assembly Salon in Los Angeles and makeup artist Jenna Anton to get their Mother's Day makeover? You bet.

Kim's hair
Kim asked Assembly Salon stylist Donet Eiwasian (@Assembly_LA) to give her a full, wavy blow out. "I usually blow dry my hair straight, but I rarely have time for a full blowout or adding any curls," Kim says.

Eiwasian used Kevin.Murphy Anti.Gravity.Spray, $24.99, to add volume to Kim's hair, then she blow dried it with a round brush for extra body. Once that was done she used a curling iron all over Kim's hair and set the curls with pins at the roots while they cooled to also help with volume. Once Kim's hair was cooled, Eiwasian took out the pins and gently brushed Kim's hair into soft waves.

Kim's face
Anton began by applying Almay Smart Shade CC Cream in light, $9.99, to Kim's face with a sponge, blending it down into her neck. "Some women are lighter in the neck and chest area, but you want it to look the same, you don't want a line of foundation," Anton says.

This CC Cream is a great option for busy moms because it covers imperfections and corrects discoloration in your skin and over time can brighten and even your natural skin tone. Plus it has SPF 35, so you can prevent future damage -- and save a couple steps by using this as your sunscreen, skin care, and makeup.

After the CC Cream, Anton applied foundation and concealer for a little extra coverage. Ones to try: Almay Smart Shade Mousse Makeup, $13.99, and Almay Line Smoothing Under Eye Concealer, $9.99.

Kim's eye makeup
The first thing Anton did for Kim's eyes is curl her eyelashes. "This alone opens up the eyes and makes them look bigger," Anton says. Then she used the Almay Intense I-Color Defining Liner in Mocha for Green Eyes, $7.99, along Kim's upper lashline to make her lashes look thicker.

After, she filled in Kim's brows and used the Almay Intense I-Color Bold Nudes Kit for Green Eyes, $6.99, to give her a soft smoky eye. Anton recommends using the sponge applicator in the palette to apply color to the lid. "It works well to pack color on, then you can use a fluffy brush to blend it all together." Anton applied the green shade to Kim's lids, then used the brown shade to contour her eyes, and the cream shade underneath her brow bone to highlight.

Once the shadow was on Anton applied a little more eyeliner to Kim's upper and lower lashlines to define her lashes and blended the line using the smudger tool on the liner.

"Once you're done with your eye makeup, if any shadow has fallen, just clean it up with eye makeup remover before you start on your face," Anton says. (One to try: Almay Oil-Free Makeup Eraser Sticks, $5.50.) And to finish up Kim's eyes, Anton applied plenty of mascara. She used Almay Intense I-Color Volumizing Mascara in Mocha for Green Eyes, $7.99, on Kim's top and bottom lashes.

Kim's finishing touches
To add a little color to Kim's face, Anton applied Almay Smart Shade Powder Blush in Coral, $9.79, onto the apples of her cheeks. She suggests pressing your brush into the compact, tapping off the excess, and then tapping the blush onto your cheeks.

Finally, Anton completed the look with Almay Color + Care Liquid Lip Balm in Pink Pout, $5.99. "I love this lip gloss, it's such a pretty shade, great for every day," Kim says.
