Photoshopped Image Of Curvy Barbie Sparks Debate

The image seems to represent an obese woman, not a regular healthy weight

Barbie dolls amount to little more than jointed pieces of plastic with a wig on top, but that small fact hasn't spared Mattel's most popular creation from becoming a hot-button point of interest in regards to body image. Barbie's unrealistically long, slender limbs and wide-spaced features are often cited as exactly what's wrong with toys intended for young girls.

Barbie has seen her share of more realistic mockups -- artists creating Photoshopped or material manipulations of the doll that give her a real woman's proportions and likeness. But Barbie's latest Photoshop facelift has gathered an especially alarming amount of media steam since it was posted by Facebook group Plus Size Modeling last week.

The image parallels what is intended as a "curvy" Barbie with the Barbie sold in stores, but the general consensus is that this Barbie isn't curvy -- she's morbidly obese. With a grand total of three chins, this "plus-sized" Barbie looks more like Honey Boo Boo's Mama June than a healthy, average size 14-16.

Indeed, the image looks like it was created out of contempt for plus-sized women, not realism. It begs the question, can't we get a likeness of realistic proportions, not one of exaggerated thinness or obesity? [Daily Mail]
