The Reason Olivia Palermo Looks So Put Together

Spoiler: It has nothing to do with her insane wardrobe
Olivia Palermo is the ultimate tastemaker. You can't scroll through Pinterest without seeing (and subsequently pinning) her sartorial brilliance. And more than one of our past "Tastemaker" subjects has cited Palermo as a style icon.

One of the reasons Palermo's style is so on-point is her attention to detail. Every outfit is artfully accessorized and impeccably tailored to her diminutive frame. (In fact, Palermo uses "accessorized" and tailored" to describe her own look.) And the attention to detail doesn't stop there: It impacts her beauty routine, as well.

Palermo is beyond scrupulous when it comes to her manicure and pedicure. She says she wears red polish 98 percent of the time, and her fingers and toes always match. "I like the consistency," she says. And as soon as she sees a chip, she heads to the nail salon. "Every four or five days -- I'm religious about it," she says.

Palermo's obsession with nails led her to become the Creative Director for Ciaté London for 2015. She'll be designing four collections over the course of the year, the first of which just launched. The Olivia Palermo X Ciaté London Collection, $24 each, is made up of a nude, a bright coral and -- of course -- the perfect red. So we can all copy Palermo's manicure -- if not the rest of her impeccable fashion sense.

Olivia Palermo

1) TotalBeauty: How would you describe your style?

Olivia Palermo: Colorful, eclectic, accessorized, tailored. There's a little bit of structure but also fluidity of fabrics.

2) TB: What's the oldest item in your closet you refuse to throw out?

OP: I have quite a few. I'm good with archiving -- I started at a young age. My family and I lived in Santa Fe for a bit, and the Native American women would make jewelry. I have some amazing turquoise pieces. I also have this great Betsey Johnson cape I've had in my closet since I was at least 14, and I still manage to fit into it.

3) TB: What trends are you most excited about for summer?

OP: I was really excited about fringe and tassels last season, and there's been a new take on it. Rebecca Minkoff did a great tassel bag, and Tibi did a great fringe leather skirt. And I love the wide-leg pant look for summer -- it's so chic. Frame does a great pair.

4) TB: What beauty essentials do you keep in your bag?

OP: Elnett hairspray, an extra bottle of red nail polish, powder, blush, eyeliner, double-sided tape and dry shampoo. And a comb.

5) TB: You're so many women's style icon. Do you have any of your own style icons?

OP: I really get my inspiration through my travels and seeing young stylish girls all over the world. I'm inspired by how they wear things and how they're excited about fashion. I see that more and more on the streets now because I think fashion has become much more mass and commercial. And a lot of that has to do with e-commerce.

TB: And what's your favorite city for fashion?

OP: Tokyo. You see all types of fashion on the street.
