The Latest Senior Slim Down Craze? Pole Fitness

This ain't your grandma's workout routine
Seniors who want to lose weight aren't hitting the gym or getting on the treadmill for a leisurely walk. No, they're trying something a bit more adventurous these days. It's called Aqua Pole Fitness, and it's the latest craze among the senior set looking to slim down.

Based on land-based pole exercises, aqua pole dance is a popular option at Ashbridge Manor in Downingtown, PA. Ashbridge is one of only two locations that offers the classes. Founded by Monica Spagnuolo, the program is oriented around a variety of fast moving workout moves. It works the shoulders, abdominals, legs and butt in up to 150 different combinations. Proponents say it improves flexibility, posture, and coordination. And it acts as great physical therapy for arthritis and injuries.

"It's completely different from pole fitness at the studio," explains Trevin Green, who runs the program at the Theresa Banks Memorial Aquatic Center, the other U.S. location that holds aqua pole fitness classes. "It's more upper body and core training because you have the water to give you the buoyancy you need." Which is why it makes it a great option for older or injured populations. Though hopefully, says Green, the fitness trend will spread. We certainly want to give it a go. [USA Today]
