Whether you're a beauty newbie or a cosmetic aficionado, we can all agree that makeup sponges are game changers. Although these sponges seem straightforward, they're not 100 percent foolproof. Using Cheap Sponges
When it comes to makeup application, pinching your pennies can defeat the purpose of using a sponge in the first place. Lower-quality sponges sold in bulk are usually too thin and small. In addition, they usually absorb too much of the foundation and don't blend very well. Spend the extra money and buy a quality makeup sponge that's a little firmer but still soft enough to give you a dewy glow.

Going With a Dry Sponge
If you used your makeup sponge dry and ended up looking like a patchy circus clown, this might be a good time to tell you that they work best when slightly wet. A damp sponge will give you streak-free blending and a flawless finish.

Forgetting to Blend
The best thing about sponges is that they do most of the work for you. A wet sponge helps you achieve coverage that's sheer and even, so all you need to do is fine-tune your blending skills. After years of applying your foundation with a brush, it's tempting to drag your sponge across your face using the same technique. This method won't end life as you know it, but you also won't achieve the perfectly even look you were hoping for. Instead, you need to gently tap the sponge onto your skin and blend using patting motions. Although it takes a bit more time, the end result is worth the wait.

Using a Dirty Sponge (Eww)
It might seem like overkill to wash your sponge every day, but you need to clean your applicators each time you use them. One of the biggest mistakes women make is using a sponge with old makeup on it, which can clog pores and put more bacteria on your face.

Going With the Wrong Size and Shape
Sponges are versatile, so be sure to use them to their fullest potential. In addition to applying foundation, you can also use them to apply bronzer, blush, sunscreen and powder. Unfortunately, cosmetic sponges are not a one-size-fits-all solution. The type of product you're applying will determine which shape will give you the best coverage. The large makeup sponge you use for your foundation isn't going to be the best choice when it comes to adding bronzer to your look.

Forgetting to Handle With Care
Cosmetic makeup sponges are delicate, so you need to handle them with care. Always squeeze or gently pinch to remove any excess moisture from your sponge. Wringing them out will only lead to premature tearing.
