FINALLY! Foundation Matching Goes High Tech

See the cool gadget the color gurus at Pantone cooked up with Sephora
I'm only slightly exaggerating when I say that finding the right foundation might be harder than finding the perfect man. With so many colors, tones, textures, and formulas out there, foundation is one of the trickiest things to test out in the store -- especially under those glaring lights. It's nearly impossible to see if you look like a chalky ghost or a greasy Oompa Loompa.

Enter: Sephora + PANTONE Color IQ, a spectrocolorimeter that identifies the color of your skin in seconds, then selects a match from a library of 1,300 color palettes. Not just any color library. Pantone's color library. Let's put that into perspective for you: Pantone is to color what the Oxford English Dictionary is to words. It's extensive, and it's ... amazing.

So, back to the spectrocolorimeter. Once you've found your unique color code, Sephora's computer generates a list of different foundations that offer a shade closest to your skin tone.

The technology (previously only available in NYC and SF) will be available in 300 stores across the US and Canada this year. Even better, select Sephora stores are demonstrating the gizmo this summer (call your local store to find out if they're offering the service). On July 26-28 and August 2-4 from 12 noon - 6 p.m., hit your local Sephora to learn your true shade -- at last! Customers receive a complimentary face mask, peel, eye treatment, or BB or CC cream application. And they say they'll throw in a free deluxe sample too. We're so in.
