Fashion Designer + Taxidermist = Scary Styles

PETA is surely chomping at the bit to get their claws into this artist
Divya Anantharaman
What do you get when you cross a fashionista with a taxidermist? In the case of Divya Anantharaman, you get some weird-ass shoes and other sundry accessories.

Although the Pratt Institute graduate, who majored in sculpture and fashion and claims to have had a lifelong obsession with dead animals and preserving them, had long been concentrating her efforts on decorative taxidermy (read: styling that dead Bambi head you have hanging on the wall with earrings and, perhaps, a headband) Anantharaman has recently joined forces with a London-based cobbler to help make her designs come to fruition.

From her Williamsburg, Brooklyn home base, Anantharaman sketches out her concepts and sends them along to London to get constructed. Over the weekend at the Bedford + Bowery Bazaar in New York, the artist allowed visitors a preview of her first line of shoes. The piece de resistance? A pair of six-inch sparrow heels with silver scales, feathers, crystals, and veritable dead sparrows. Eek.

Whether or not her creations will ever be worn as functional footwear remains to be seen -- the artist herself says," A shoe this high, even if it was plain, is not made for taking the subway." And with the price tag ($2,000-$3,500), "[they're] something you could wear to the Met gala," or, perhaps, if you're into such things, just position them on your mantle or, gack, nightstand?

With New York Fashion Week getting underway, will any of Anantharaman's creations eke out a place on someone's avant-garde catwalk? For now, she's not saying. Guess we'll just have to keep our eye peeled (or heavily shaded).
