35 Million Americans Suffer from This Skin Condition

The dos and don'ts of treating eczema
Put down your pumpkin spice latte and listen up: October is Eczema Awareness Month. More than 35 million Americans suffer from this chronic skin disorder, and it doesn't discriminate -- infants, children and adults are affected by it. There's no known cure for eczema, which manifests in painful, itchy, inflamed and dry skin, and can be triggered by different, everyday conditions, like stress or allergies.

But there are ways to ease the severity of outbreaks and get relief from the painful, itchy symptoms. Dr. Kenneth Beer, M.D., a board certified dermatologist, says treating eczema requires a combination of preventative care and therapeutic efforts. Here are a few of Dr. Beer's dos and don'ts for treating eczema:

DO use hydrating washes and barrier creams with soothing ingredients, like colloidal oatmeal, daily to maintain the skin's barrier. Try AVEENO® Eczema Therapy Bath Treatment.

DON'T use body lotions or washes with exfoliants, which can aggravate skin and cause eczema to flare.

DO look for products with ceramides -- an essential lipid naturally in the skin that plays a key role in enhancing and restoring the skin's protective layer. After bathing, apply a lotion like AVEENO® Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream, which helps skin retain moisture and contains ceramides to boost your skin's protective barrier.

DON'T use products with fragrances and harsh dyes.

DO baby your baby's skin. An estimated 10 percent of babies experience some form of eczema. Try AVEENO® Baby Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream, a fragrance-free lotion that contains colloidal oatmeal and ceramides to soothe sensitive skin.

If you suffer from eczema, look for the National Eczema Association's coveted Seal of Acceptance, a designation for products free of irritating ingredients that affect eczema and other sensitive skin conditions.
