Big Surprise: Men Are More Forgetful Than Women

A new study finds that men have overall worse memories than women
If you're finding that the guys you know -- boyfriends, husbands, brothers, and fathers -- are collectively the less sharp tacks in your life, know that it's not just you (we so feel you on that thousandth shake of your head when you have to remind your significant other yet again to buy trash bags). It's actually, well, science! According to a new study, men are more forgetful than women, regardless of how old they are.

That's small consolation when you're disappointed that your boyfriend forgot to buy you flowers on Valentine's Day, of course. Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology analyzed data from more than 30,000 respondents, who were asked questions about their memories. The study found that generally memory problems increased with age, and, wrote lead author Professor Jostein Holmen, "It was surprising to see that men forget more than women. This has not been documented before. It was also surprising to see that men are just as forgetful whether they are 30 or 60 years old. The results were unambiguous."

Holmen thinks that the discrepancies in gender may have something to do with risk factors associated with things like heart disease and high blood pressure, but they're still not sure why men can't remember things as well. So for now, we suffer without reason. [Medical News Today]
