The right makeup lighting will determine how well your foundation, eye shadow and other beauty products are used to provide even, natural coverage. To ensure that your creams and powders are applied smoothly and your face looks flawless, there are eight specific makeup lighting tips to follow.

1. Use a Lighted Makeup Mirror

Lighted mirrors offer bright diffused lighting, as well as a magnified side to help illuminate any trouble spots that need extra coverage. Whether used indoors or outdoors, lighted mirrors make it easier to create a flawless complexion.

2. Incorporate Cross Illumination in Bathrooms

Side lighting - also known as cross illumination - can be used in bathrooms that have a vertical design. For example, you can achieve excellent side makeup lighting by installing sconces along both sides of your mirror at eye level. A center ceiling piece can also be used to complement the lighting on the vanity. Being well lit from multiple angles ensures that shadows aren't cast over your face while you do your makeup.

3. Opt for Natural Light

Natural light is ideal when applying makeup. It offers an accurate glimpse of what your makeup will look like outdoors, and it illuminates your face evenly for precise application. Open up the blinds in the room where you apply makeup, and if possible, apply makeup during the day when the sun is bright and can light up the room.

4. Choose White Light

Those who don't have access to natural light during the day can opt for white makeup lighting instead, which is considered to be an ideal secondary option. White lighting known as a "daylight bulb" has a wattage of 60 to 65 and won't get too warm.

5. Avoid Recessed Lighting

Although recessed lighting has increased in popularity, it's the worst for those who want their makeup to look even and natural instead of caked on. This can cause pigmentation and wrinkles to stand out, and shadows that develop from the overhead lighting can make you look older.

6. Avoid Florescent Lights

Fluorescent lighting can provide the illusion of an unhealthy skin tone, potentially causing you to apply too much foundation. For this reason, it's best to avoid fluorescent lighting altogether when applying makeup.

7. Stand in Front of the Light

Standing directly in front of makeup lighting will work well because it eliminates shadows that are often cast by overhead lights. This will allow you to apply the right amount of coverage to ensure that the products don't appear too heavy or caked-on once you leave the room.

8. Use More Than One Light

Use more than one light for more visibility. Opt for soft, diffused lights that have been installed at face level. You'll have an easier time applying makeup correctly to ensure that it blends in well without any streaks.
