Aerin Lauder Opens Hamptons Boutique -- and the Cheapest Item is a $75 Wine Stopper

If you're lucky enough to summer in the Hamptons (don't you love how rich people use "summer" as a verb?), check out Aerin Lauder's new home store, which opens this Memorial Day. The store marks another phase of Aerin's beautifying-the-world domination -- following in the footsteps of her grandmother's beauty empire, and then her own expansion to fashion and home products. Aerin Lauder appears to have it all -- beauty, brains, business savvy, a gorgeous family, money -- so much so that perhaps she's forgetting how those of us without multiple residences live?

Don't get me wrong. I appreciate Aerin's stunning designs, and the description of her new Hamptons store sounds delightful: It has a summery, beachy feel, with long farm tables, wooden bookcases, straw hats and grasscloth-covered walls. The store will house contemporary art as well as shoes and jewelry, and as Aerin says, "it should feel as if you are exploring someone's closet or home."

Oh, Aerin. I wish my closet were that carefully curated and cultured. And while I love that you're making an effort to reach out to a wider range of consumers than just the upper (no-carb) crust Hamptonites, I'm not sure you get where most of us regular people come from. Proof? A few of her choice quotes about her store:

"Everything we do has different price points, so we have these wonderful wine stoppers that are $75 and a wonderful entry level into the world of home. And then a bowl that is a couple thousand dollars. We have something for everyone," Lauder said.

"The way women shop today is high and low. People buy something from Target and they buy something from Bergdorf Goodman. There's always something you can dream for and there is something very appealing about that."

Well, Aerin, here's to dreaming -- because I'm afraid those "several thousand dollar bowls" are going to remain solely in my dreams for a long, long time.
