Total Beauty Chats with Celebrity Hairstylist and Salon Owner Sally Hershberger

Q: How did you first get into hair and the beauty biz?
A: I began styling hair at eighteen when my mom told me it was time to get a job. At my friends’ urging I decided on beauty school. While still in training, I landed an apprenticeship in Los Angeles with esteemed hairstylist Arthur Johns. It was at this well-known Hollywood salon that I began working with celebrities and establishing relationships.

Q: What do you find most interesting/fascinating about the beauty business?
A: The best part of my job is being in the position to meet so many interesting people and making people feel beautiful.

Q: What was the most exciting or pivotal moment in your career?
A: Styling Hilary Clinton for the cover of "Vogue".
Q: What do you attribute your success in the industry to?
A: Determination and a positive outlook.

Q: How are you able to continue to find inspiration to cut and style hair after years of doing it?
A: Inspiration in the hair care business really comes from within. You have to love what you do. When you believe in something, that's when the creativity happens.

Q: How has your product business been effected by the changing economy? Are you doing anything differently these days?
A: When I launched the line it was a very different economic time, but I knew there was a void in the hair care market for high-quality, affordable products. My products allow women to quickly replicate my trademark styling without spending all their time and money on their hair. We believe that women are searching for value and will stay with products that provide high quality performance at an affordable price. Our Hyper Hydration Super Keratin Spray is a great example of taking a $200-$500 treatment home with you for only $12.50. We also want to give more women an opportunity to try the products, so we've worked out some great promotional values. For example we offer a free full size sample product with the purchase of one.

Q: Have you noticed trends in what women are buying more or less of?
A: For the most part, we believe women are buying a little less of everything, but buying smarter. Either by following coupons online or buying better quality that performs. They are also using what they have at home first, before they shop … so it's a little less impulsive.

Q: You have created some huge hair trends in your career like Meg Ryan's iconic choppy bob. Did you realize that look would become so lust-worthy?
A: No, I don’t think that’s something you can ever be prepared for. However, it has been one of the highlights of my career and even today, I have clients that request this signature cut.

Q: What is the most important lesson you've learned in your career that you'd like to pass along?
A: Be focused, pay attention to your surroundings and concentrate on what you’re doing.

Q: We can't leave without asking for some hairstyling advice -- if you could share 5 key tips with us, what would they be?
A:
  • The number one mistake women make when styling their hair is using too much product.
  • Invest in a good haircut.
  • For proper shampooing and conditioning, use products that are geared to your hair type and the look you are trying to achieve.
  • Always apply a thermal styler to your hair, such as my Go With the Blow or Hyper Hydration Super Keratin Spray, to prevent heat damage.
  • Don’t mistake “over-moisture” for healthy hair.

Q: You have salons in both New York City and Los Angeles -- which city do you prefer?
A: New York because I like to walk. I don’t like to be in a car all the time.
