3 Ways Even Your Stick-Straight Hair Can Have Beach Waves

The genius tricks you've never heard of for getting tousled, textured hair

Baby Wipe Your Hair ... Seriously
All you need for this beach waves hairstyle is a pack of baby wipes, hairspray and a good night's sleep. Starting with dry hair, separate your hair into two-inch pieces. Then, take a baby wipe (folded three times lengthwise) and roll a section of hair tightly around it as though it were a hot roller, starting at the end and rolling upward. Once you've reached your scalp, tie the ends of the baby wipe together and continue around your whole head. When you're done, your head should be covered in small knots. Sleep on the style overnight; then in the morning take out the baby wipes. Using your fingers or a fine-tooth comb, loosen the style and finish with a light hold hairspray like Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Perfect Texture Finishing Spray.

"A baby wipe is perfect because it is sturdy and already damp, so you don't have to shower before creating luscious waves," says Russo. If your hair has behavioral issues when it comes to curly styles, Salon Mario Russo's Artistic Director Sal Malafronte suggests applying a texture cream to hair pre-baby wipes. (We like R+Co Jackpot Styling Creme.)

Malafronte warns against substituting a baby wipe with makeup removing wipes or cleansing towelettes (hey, I had to ask). "[These] often contain cleansing agents or detergents that are too harsh on hair. Since baby wipes are tailored to infants and children they're super gentle, but still effective for the style."

Save Your Ratty T-Shirts
I know I can't be the only one who has a stack of T-shirts she doesn't wear but keeps to remind herself that once upon a time she did run races and do charity work. Instead of letting your old t-shirts guilt trip you, turn them into an easy styling tool. Begin by misting a sea salt spray sparingly all over damp hair. Russo's favorite is Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray. Next, take two-inch sections of hair and, with a t-shirt, scrunch each section from the ends to the scalp. Russo uses a t-shirt rather than his hands to help avoid frizz and friction. A t-shirt even works better than a towel, because it minimizes breakage, says Malafronte. "A cotton t-shirt will sop up just the right amount of water and moisture from your locks leaving the perfect canvas for beachy waves." Let hair air dry, or for more volume, use a finger-like diffuser on the end of your blow dryer.

For a DIY alternative, make Russo's homemade sea salt spray at home: Fill an eight-ounce spray bottle with water. Add a few tablespoons of sea salt to the bottle (for more texture, add more salt), and finish by adding a few drops of moisturizing product like Moroccanoil or your daily conditioner. Shake, spray and enjoy your Ariel-like hair.

Grab Your Flat Iron
It seems counter-productive to use a flat iron to create curls, but Malafronte swears this method will create more modern, natural-looking beach waves than the big, bouncy curls you get from using a curling iron. Start by separating hair into one-inch sections. Next, Russo says to clamp down the flat iron approximately three inches from the root and rotate the iron in 180-degree turns about every inch as you go down the length of the hair. Finish by spraying with a stronghold hairspray like Rusk Freezing Spray Humidity-Resistant Hairspray Extreme Hold. Once you've conquered beach waves with Russo's techniques, may we suggest you take a week off? Might as well show them off on an actual beach.

Every summer, I'm bombarded with magazine spreads and YouTube tutorials on how to get the perfect beach waves -- and I devour every one of them. I buy salt spray and sit religiously in front of my vanity trying to create those perfectly undone, (seemingly) low-maintenance waves. Summer beach waves may be considered a "quick and easy" hairstyle, but my limp, un-waved hair insists otherwise. Enter the hair geniuses at Salon Mario Russo in Boston. Owner and lead stylist Mario Russo has created three out-of-the-box techniques for creating beach waves that will work on even the straightest hair, guaranteed. And get this -- you don't need a curling iron, wand or automatic machine doo-dad to get the look. Get ready to have your world rocked, and your waves turned seriously beachy.
