Skin care

Looks like she made it. Shania Twain and her Swiss businessman boyfriend, Frederic Thiebaud tied the knot in an intimate beach wedding on New Year's Day in Rincon, Puerto Rico. (Hopefully this New Year's resolution will be an easy one to keep.) And, it seems they have their ex's to thank for getting them together. Supposedly her ex-husband 'Mutt' Lang and Thiebaud's wife had an affair, sending both couples to Splitsville -- is that great inspiration for a country song or what? Twain looked fab for her sandy trip down the aisle, but with most of the country (and her house in Switzerland) knee-deep in snow, how did she get her winter skin looking so glow-y and beach-worthy? (Yes, skin has different needs depending on the season and you should adapt your skin care routine accordingly.) To help you get skin as gorgeous, we spoke to Shelley Bawiec, Global Director of Spa Sales & Education for Aveda, to get the wedding beauty tips Twain likely used leading up to her wedding day, and ones that'll get you glowing winter, spring, summer or fall ...
Winter:
Your skin:
Common skin concerns in the winter include dryness, tightness, irritation and sensitivity, so you need to keep it well hydrated, says Bawiec.>
What to do:
"During the winter, incorporate a light level of exfoliation in to your daily regimen. This will eliminate the top layer of dead skin cells and enable hydrating products to work better. I recommend using a heavier cream moisturizer in the winter to protect skin from the climate. Aveda's Green Science Firming Face Creme, $55 with argan oil, plai and cactus is fantastic at adding moisture back into the skin and restoring glow," she says. Dry, winter air exacerbates dry, itchy skin, so you can also try sleeping with a humidifier next to your bed.
What not to do:
"It's best to avoid deeper exfoliation treatments in the winter," she says. "The cold and dryness of the season can strip skin of its natural barrier, so avoid compounding those effects."
Spring:
Your skin:
"A dull appearance is a common skin concern in the spring. Skin is recovering from winter and is often left with a buildup of dry cells, which can hide any natural glow." To combat that dullness, you'll need to exfoliate, she says.
What to do:
"Using a weekly physical exfoliation product will jumpstart your spring skin care regimen." Try Kate Somerville Exfolikate, $90. Or opt for "professional treatments [which] can [also] make a big difference in skin's appearance while providing time for mental recovery as well." Try a resurfacing treatment, which will help shed that winter skin.
What not to do:
Be careful not to over exfoliate, she says. "Only use strong physical exfoliators, like those with rough textures, once a week to avoid doing harm to the skin."
Summer:
Your skin:
"Skin can get oily, shiny and congested in the summer. Over-exposure to the sun can lead to burns, dryness and peeling," she says, so you must, must, must protect it from the sun's damaging rays.
What to do:
"Most people should switch to a lighter, water-based moisturizer in the summer to maintain skin's balance. Many people experience breakouts in the summer, so use products with salicylic acid, which are designed to clear pore-clogging debris. Use gentle cleansing products with salicylic acid on acne prone areas like your chest and back too in order to limit other unwanted breakouts. Above all, use an SPF product daily to protect from damage," she says.
What not to do:
"Since increased sun exposure is common in the summer, use physical [grainy] exfoliants sparingly and opt for gentle professional services that protect and care for the skin."
Fall:
The transition from summer can lead to unevenness in skin's texture and tone, so the keyword for this season is balance, she says.
What to do:
"If you're experiencing uneven skin tone, use [brightening] products with active ingredients like vitamin C derivatives, mulberry root and grape extracts." And look for skin balancing moisturizers too.
What not to do:
Don't just assume you can use the same products season after season, year after year. Your skin changes, so you'll need to update your products too. "Any treatment or skin care regimen should be customized to your personal skin conditions. Fall is a great time of year to consult a professional esthetician to make sure you are on track with the professional services and products for your specific needs."
