It does a good job separating your lashes

    by cheetah11 (151 reviews)

I was pretty surprised at the results I got when I used this product. I have used many mascaras from super expensive to drugstore ones and this is one of the few I've used that actually separates my lashes. I'm sure it's due to the round shaped bristle brush this product comes with. It also does a good job getting at the... shorter lash hairs that are often missed by regular mascara brushes. The product comes with a long wand in a sleek, red container. I have the color "Black" and it's a good black in that it really makes my hazel eyes pop with the contrast of the mascara. I'm sure the color "Blackest Black" would be even better but I haven't tried that one yet. This is also one of the few mascaras that didn't cause my eyes to itch after a few hours. As far as length of wear, it lasted all day, from morning until the time I took it off at night. My only gripe with this mascara is that out of the container, it comes out real thick and the first time I used it, it caused some of my lash hairs to clump. It's best to use a little at a time and build to the desired coverage but the formula doesn't dry as fast as some mascaras I've used so it gives you more time to brush out the clumps. All in all, a good drugstore product. I would even go as far to say it outperformed some of my more expensive mascaras. September 8, 2009, 9:59 pm

    small brush makes application difficult

    by mink88 (76 reviews)

I've been using mascara for more than 40 years and am used to applying a couple of quick swipes (with a jiggle) to get the job done. The small, ball-like applicator for this one was more trouble than it was worth. You practically have to apply it on each individual lash. And it clumps, undoing the benefit of being able to ...get to every small lash. It does lengthen and separate as advertised, stayed in place (once I got the clumps out and away) perfectly all day, and was easy to remove, but wasn’t enough better than my usual brands to warrant the greatly increased time it took to apply. I also found it slightly irritating - not so much that I needed to remove it but reddening my eyes a bit after a couple of hours. September 11, 2009, 12:26 pm

    gimmicky givenchy copycat

This mascara was okay. I think the wand looks cool and trendy like the Givenchy Phenomeneys version. Functionally, The spherical shaped wand gets to all of the tiny bottom lashes and you can maneuver all the way to the root, BUT it was very difficult to get the lashes at the outer corner of the eyes. It is also more time... intensive because you coat a couple lashes at a time and can clump. The mascara formula really lengthened, but did not add volume to my lashes--I prefer Clinique's High Impact for long, natural looking lashes. It did smudge a flake a bit due to my allergies but is comparable to better quality non-waterproof mascaras. For a non-waterproof mascara, I would buy MAC's Plushlash or Covergirl's Lashblast instead for long, thick lashes. September 11, 2009, 4:43 pm

    Tricky and time consuming

    by shriekingviolet (76 reviews)

When I first heard about L'Oreal releasing a mascara similar to Givenchy Phenomen'Eyes I was intrigued. The round, spiky brush first spotted on the Givenchy mascara is so peculiar it's nearly impossible not to want to try it, but the nearly $30 price tag made it a bit too spendy to purchase for the sake of experimentation.... A similar brush from L'Oreal would give people the opportunity for people to get their feet wet with this new style of mascara brush at a more affordable price point. Now that I've had the opportunity to try this out, I'm awfully glad I didn't splurge for the Givenchy mascara. This brush is just too challenging for every day use. Don't get me wrong, it's far from awful. The mascara is capable of delivering great length and volume as promised, and I've never had better luck reaching the tiny lashes in both inner and outer corners, but the tiny brush and its goop-attracting wand just make this too time consuming and messy for every day use. The small brush means you have to do three times as many swipes to apply mascara to the entire lashline as its tininess means fewer hairs are touched at once, Also, while I didn't have much trouble applying my mascara clump free on my right eye, my poor dexterity meant that while I was applying everything in a right to left fashion meant that all the goop stuck to the wand came into contact with my lashes when I tried to do my left eye making the lashes look caked and clumpy. I tried blotting the wand to see if that would help, but no dice. Perhaps if I were able to manage holding the brush "backwards" while doing my left eye I wouldn't have an issue, but I can't manage it. At least not unless I'm able to really take my time doing my lashes. The formula is also wetter than most mascaras so it stays in danger of smudging or smearing just from blinking too much or light contact longer than most, but once it sets (maybe 2-4 minutes later) it's pretty stable. It does flake a bit , though I think that may have more to do with my wand-caused overapplication as it seemed to flake worse on my left than right. Overall, the brush is interesting but there are many other mascaras on the market that can give the same level of thickness, length and "fanned lash" look that have less arduous learning curves. I'll keep the tube because of its proficiency at capturing smaller lashes in tighter spots but I don't seem myself using it often for the entire eye. September 11, 2009, 1:22 am

    terrible applicator

    by Mrskimgaroo (1 review)
The Formula is a very 'creamy' so it glides on well. However the applicator, which is the selling point, ironically made the formula on lashes very clumpy and uneven. For $9.49, you get what you paid for. 3 stars for cheap mascara. September 10, 2009, 6:58 pm

    Awful Clumps

    by steph2010 (1 review)
When I first took out the brush, the end was covered with the mascara liquid, I knew the product was going to be messy. It usually only takes a few strokes to put on mascara, but with this brush I had to carefully work my around the eye. The end result were lashes with more clumps than I have received from any other mascara.... September 15, 2009, 1:58 pm

    Mixed feelings

    by ama1221 (131 reviews)
    Top 100 ReviewerTrusted Review
Overall, I feel like this is a phenomenal mascara for the price. Unfortunately I think this mascara's greatest strength is also its greatest weakness. The actual formula is what I've come to expect from L'oreal, it wears great. Despite crying once while wearing this mascara, it never smeared or smudged, but came off easi...ly. However, as I mentioned, this mascara's innovative wand is not only its strength, but also its weakness. What's bad: No matter what I did, mascara seemed to cake behind the medieval mace looking brush. If I didn't wipe it off before applying my mascara, I'd end up with horrible stuck together lashes with too much mascara on them. I hated having to waste that much mascara. What's good: The brush really is awesome. It reached lashes I didn't even know I had. As long as I wiped the base of the wand off, I had no smears or smudges from applying the mascara. If it was possible, I'd give L'oreal a 10 for overall concept, but a 5 for its actual execution. September 14, 2009, 4:38 pm

    Inventive new mascara!

    by Kirstie (84 reviews)
    Top 500 ReviewerTrusted Review
This is a great product to try out if you are looking for a way to get those small eye lashes 1) on the bottom, 2) in the corner of you upper eyes, and 3) at the outer corner of your eyes. The small brush really enables you to get all of those lashes... and shows you what lashes you did not even know that you had! The color... is very black and lasts all day, if you don't rub your eyes, but if you do, it will smear the color. It does wash off very easily with water and even when I got some in my eye, did not irritate them! I did find that this increased the length and volume of my lashes, but not the curl, and it was prone to clumping if you did not clean of the bottom of the brush. I think that the only thing I did not like about it was that it smelled funny, but then again, most mascaras do. With a few attempts at mastering this new brush you will enjoy it! Great to lengthen your lashes

    by darkangel81 (208 reviews)
    Top 100 ReviewerTrusted Review
The brush is truly unique. You need to hold it towards your eye instead of sideways, like a regular mascara brush. It definitely did get all the lashes, even the ones in the corners. The only downside to this mascara is that it didn't build up alot of volume. I have skimpy lashes and this made my lashes lengthy, but not... full. Plus, the formula made my lashes straight even when using an eyelash curler. Overall, this is a great mascara, but not for me. It will definitely bring out someone else's lashes. Long lashes and little flakes....

    by MLC512 (157 reviews)
    Top 100 Reviewer
First of all, I LOVE the brush! It's easy to use, and you do end up getting every last lash. I found 2 downsides with this product, it doesn't build any volume and by the end of the day, I found mascara flakes under my lashes - NOT GOOD. What I found works best, is to use this product on the tips of my eyelashes after us...ing my regular volume building mascara. I LOVED how it coated all my bottom lashes without looking a mess, but I was bummed when I saw afternoon flakes. I'll use what I have left, but I'm not sure if I would purchase it again. All mascaras should offer this awesome little brush though! September 10, 2009, 6:19 am
