For most hair masks to be truly effective, you need to leave them on much longer than recommended so the product can really sink in. That's not the case with Alterna Ten Hair Mask. I tried it once for only five minutes on my long, fin hair and after rinsing, my frizzy ends were completely smoothed and my hair was incredibly soft and shiny -- just what I was hoping for. On my second try I left it on overnight and while the results were still nice, they weren't any better than the five-minute trial. So although it is pricy, the time saved and the impressive results make it worth the cost to anyone with dry hair in need of a moisture boost (fine hair will want to avoid the root area).

L'Oreal Studio Shine Seeker Glass Shine Spray has a silicone fluid base (cyclopentasiloxane) that adds compliment-worthy shine to hair without weighing it down or messing with your style. Only a few sprays are needed; too much and your hair may feel stiff or look shellacked. For more control, spray it into hands first then smooth it over hair. Opt to use it as a finishing spray on dry strands; it doesn't work well on wet hair before blow-drying.

"Instant firming" is misleading but fine lines are less noticeable after a week of using Revlon Age Defying Instant Firming Face Primer. (You can actually see what Revlon claims is Botafirm, a botanical and antioxidant complex, making a difference over time.) A decent primer, it promotes longevity of makeup and allows it to glide on smoothly. Pores look smaller but shine isn't controlled as much as expected (oily skin types may want to skip it). One huge downside: The very strong smell resembles that of wet grass -- a deal breaker for most consumers.

If shine is your only need, welcome Redken Vinyl Glam into your product collection. It doesn't hold style, add volume or control frizz (nor does it claim to) but it does give strands a seriously glossy sheen. Avoid spritzing roots as they'll come out looking greasy but otherwise enjoy a liberal application as the formula won't weigh strands down. Hair may feel parched after applying but it won't look that way.

It takes a few days for Pur Minerals Under Control gel to fully kick in, but once it does, oily skin is banished all day. Oil production does appear reduced while the gel absorbs quickly to give skin a matte, smooth finish without overdrying. It works best when applied morning and night before putting on serums or creams, and it's totally undetectable under makeup. Pore size doesn't appear reduced as claimed but you'll relish not having to use blot powder all day.

It may not seem like a beauty necessity, but you'll likely be hooked after one use of the Neutrogena Wave. The vibrating head and attached cleansing pad gently exfoliate to leave normal skin types feeling clean but not too dry. (Note: The pads do contain SLS and fragrance so sensitive skin may rebel.) Skin feels softer and smoother after one use, and looks better several days later. Plus the device can even be used in the shower. The only major downside (besides occasionally reported defects) is that the disposable pads need to be refilled -- not exactly earth- or budget-friendly.

If you long to have fewer loose items in your purse, try Mark Shine Tubes Hook Up Gloss, which can be "hooked up" via connector to various other Mark products (like a mini mascara) to make a customized, one-stop wand for touch-ups. Squeezed from a tube, the gloss can be a tad runny, but it feels great on, tastes delicious (one four of the flavors includes Buttercream Brioche -- yum) and delivers medium shimmer. Color only lasts an hour or two, but it's meant to be toted for easy reapplication.

JLo says her Glow After Dark fragrance was "inspired by the feeling you get ... out at a nightclub with your friends," and it shows. Notes of passionfruit, orange flower and musk are sexy, upbeat, sultry and sophisticated -- perfect for a night on the dance floor. Fortunately the affordable scent lasts all night (which makes up for the fact that you can't see how much is left in the flashy bottle). A light spritz makes this strong scent appropriate for day, but it's best worn -- well, after dark!

Got2b's Styltini Double Shot Thickener, a yummy piņa colada-scented gel, doesn't necessarily thicken strands but does lend hair plenty of volume and bounce. The product is easily distributed through hair with hands, leaving it soft after blow-drying with gorgeous volume that lasts all day. The oomph does fall flat before a full 24 hours but who needs volume while they're sleeping? Got2b recommends drying hair upside down for even more volume but that trick works with most volumizing products.

"Intensive" is right. Eucerin Plus Intensive Repair Body Cream is thick. Really thick. Those in desperate need of hydration should slather it on severely dry areas and use it to help repair cracked skin. It can be a tad greasy so it's best to apply at night to let it sink in. You'll wake up with dramatically softer skin that lasts all day. Ingredients like alpha hydroxy acid and urea can help improve keratosis pilaris and exfoliate dry skin but don't expect visibly dramatic results. Overall, it's a good investment for very dry skin.
