I dye my hair red, but unfortunately I started
going gray in my early 30s. So between salon visits, I do anything I can to cover my roots.
With the recession, I've tried to stretch my salon visits out a bit, going every eight weeks instead of six. So covering those grays is more important (and more difficult) than ever.
Headbands and hats work once in a while, but I can't exactly wear a hat to work every day.
In a pinch, I have tried a root touch-up kit from the drugstore, like
Clairol Nice 'n Easy Root Touch-Up, $6.99. I can never do as good a job as my stylist (and that's why she gets the big bucks), but this works in emergency situations ... like when you have a big job interview, but your hairstylist can't fit you in.
I've also used
ColorMark Gray Roots Gone Instantly Instant Liquid Touch-Up, $21.95. It goes on with a foam applicator and covers my grays perfectly until my next shampoo. I never leave home without this product.
One time before a party, I used Anastasia's
strawberry-tinted brow gel on my roots and that covered them pretty well. I've also heard that mascara that matches your hair color works, too.

I like Roux's "Tween Time" hair crayon. It's chubby (enough to cover even large areas). You only need to wet the color and brush on. You can comb and brush through it and it looks natural.

There are powders now that you "paint" on your roots that will last until you shampoo it out. I think this great for in between appointments!

The touchup products don't seem to be as helpful as the actual dye, but I guess it depends on your natural hair color and the dyed color. My mom's hair is going gray (her hair is naturally black), so when the roots start showing we just dye it all with a box of regular ColorStay dye.
