Perfect your pout with one of these killer looks

Choosing a lipstick that works with dark skin tones can feel like a challenge. It may seem easier to stick to the plum and berry shades you know look fantastic with your complexion, instead of worrying about whether you can pull off an orange lip. (Spoiler alert: you definitely can.) But makeup --and lipstick especially, in our opinion -- should be fun, and more about what makes you feel gorgeous than sticking to a set of rules.

In fact, celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose says that color-wise, lipstick options are practically limitless for dark-skinned women. We got his tips on how to wear any lipstick color with a dark complexion -- think vibrant violets, dreamy nudes, bold reds that work day and night and even an on-trend ombré look that's surprisingly easy to pull off.

Your New Power Lip
On days when you need a little pick-me-up, opt for a classic color that screams confidence. Celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose says that Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Pirate is one of his favorite shades to use on dark skin tones. This bold, bright shade pops against darker skin and complements a variety of skin tones thanks to the blend of warm and cool pigments.

Who Says Neutral Is Boring?
Nude lipstick is super versatile -- it can be the perfect partner to a sexy smoky eye or bold colored liner, or it can be a toned-down way to look polished. When choosing a nude color, Barose recommends choosing one with red or orange in it, so it doesn't look too brown ("like you're wearing foundation on your lips"). Avoid nudes that are lighter than your skin tone, which "float strangely on dark skin," says Barose. "It should pop a little."

Take Red to the Next Level
For your next night out, try a deep, rich red -- it's sultry and sophisticated at the same time. One of Barose's favorite shades for darker skin is Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge in Rouge Velour, which he describes as "a gorgeous deep ruby red with shimmer."

Don't Be Afraid of Bright Colors
According to Barose, there are few colors that are completely out of the question. Just steer clear of any hue that's paler than your skin and you're all set. With that in mind, you definitely don't need to be afraid of taking that stunning violet lipstick you've been eyeing out for a spin. Barose-approved picks are Makeup Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense Lipstick in #15 or Tom Ford Lip Color in Violet Fatale. And to keep bright colors from feathering, he recommends lining lips with a clear wax lip pencil -- he says Lancome and Dior both make great ones.
