10 Worst Beauty Trends of 2015

Here, the makeup and hair trends that won't live to see 2016 (or so we hope)

2015 has been a veritable whirlwind of beauty trends. Thanks to red carpets, runways, and the beauty mecca that is social media, we've seen sensational beauty trends spread faster than Nutella on a warm piece of pumpkin loaf. (Hey, 'tis the season.)

There were a few beauty trends we loved since day one: strobing and brown lipstick, for example. But 2015 has been a year of all-around beauty extremes, and according to celebrity makeup artists and hair stylists, there are a select few that simply should not see the light of day come January 1, 2016.

We get it -- it's hard to determine which beauty trends need to join the likes of 2012's ombré and 2002's over-plucked brows in the annals of bad beauty looks gone by. Luckily, we have industry trend forecasters to help us not look like a hot mess next year.

Ready to kill your darlings? From Instagram's "eyebrows on fleek" and Pinterest's galaxy hair to the runways' black lipstick and clumpy lashes, find out which 2015 beauty trends are headed for the gallows.

RIP Instagram Eyebrows
Last year we had Cara Delevigne's power brow, and this year we had Instagram eyebrows -- those #eyebrowsonfleek that fade from bold and dark at the tail to almost nonexistent near the nose. A.k.a. the shape and color of absolutely no one's natural eyebrows, ever.

Eyebrows frame the face and are meant to create balance. "Bold, full brows are classic and here to stay, but these unnatural Instagram brows can overwhelm delicate features and become a caricature of the beautifully bold eyebrow," says New York City brow guru Ramy Gafni.

In 2016, we can expect to see softer brows filled in with less thick pomade and more natural powder. Our prediction for brow icon of 2016? Gigi Hadid.

RIP Rainbow Hair
Galaxy hair, "My Little Pony" hair -- whatever you want to call it, according to colorist Melissa Hoyle at Spoke and Weal in Los Angeles, "the bright fashion colors are fading fast, literally."

We've seen a spectrum of wild pigments everywhere from Pinterest's space-inspired colors to celebrities' vivid blues, pinks and seafoam greens. (Think: Katy Perry and Kylie Jenner.) But our trend forecasters say these cartoony brights have run their course.

That doesn't mean we have to leave all the fun in 2015, however. Next year, Hoyle predicts that we'll be seeing darker versions of these vibrant hues. Picture the midnight blue that Nicole Richie is currently rocking. "Keep your eyes peeled for dark eggplants and rich forest greens, as well," Hoyle says. "A darker twist for the fashionista that likes to add a pop of color to her look."

RIP Eyelash Extensions
Yes, it's true -- makeup artists agree that 2016 will be the year our lashes get back to basics. (Don't freak out, we'll get through this together.)

"Lash extensions really blew up this year," says celebrity makeup artist Felicia Alva, creator of Flutter Beauty. While adhering six-millimeter strips of mink to your eyelashes used to be reserved for the Beverly Hills contingent, Alva says we have social media to blame for the mainstream explosion of this pricy procedure.

True, long eyelashes are a timeless trend -- but the artificial mile-long look can make your eyes appear smaller or change the shape of your eyes for the worse. "Plus, the adhesive is not healthy for your real lashes," Alva adds. Our experts predict a softer look for 2016. (Hey, sounds like a money saver to us.)

RIP Cream Contouring
Welp, there goes the 50 bucks spent on that cream contour palette. "2015 taught us many things, and the power of a good contour was certainly one of them, but too much of a good thing is just plain bad," says celebrity makeup artist Zena Shteysel.

Cream contour products offer that chiseled look that works under bright red carpet lights and for photo shoots -- but using these products for everyday is just excessive. "A heavy contour isn't flattering," says Shteysel. "Instead, grab a good highlighting powder -- try Anastasia Beverly Hills Illuminator, $28 -- because strobing (an exaggerated highlight sans the contour) isn't going anywhere in 2016."
