Art Director
TotalBeauty.com is seeking a talented full-time Art Director to join our growing team.
The art director will serve as a critical member of our team, working primarily with the editorial group but also overseeing work for sales, marketing and business development across all Total Beauty properties. Drawing upon an expert-level design and web development background, the art director's responsibilities include everything from image preparation and asset generation to the general supervision and management of all creative executions related to site redesigns, collateral and newsletters.
Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, the ideal candidate must be an extremely self-motivated individual who has worked on complex, large-scale media sites and who is an ardent evangelizer of progressive design processes and trends. The candidate must have a stellar portfolio of original work for the web (non-flash sites preferred) and must be vocal about implementing corporate design standards and offer creative advice to staff members at all levels.
This is a high growth position and while the successful candidate must be willing to do a lot of non-creative day-to-day work at the outset, they will have the opportunity to lead in the development of a strong new creative department as the company continues to expand.
Job Responsibilities
- Work closely with site engineers and project management to execute best-of-breed design concepts for new products
- Oversee and perform day-to-day graphical asset prep for editorial content and newsletters
- Develop corporate brand book and keep it up to date
- Provide creative support to sales group
- Develop best practices and policies on UI with front-end engineers and product developers
- Provide concept guidance and comps for other owned properties
- Manage development and purchase of corporate collateral and swag
- Hire and manage contract or full-time design staff as company grows
- Experience in corporate branding
- Background in media site design and production strongly preferred
Candidate Requirements
- Expert-level on all design software platforms
- Advanced knowledge of basic front end coding languages (HTML, CSS)
- Experience working on large, complex and content-heavy web projects
- Complete knowledge of online best-practices and UI
- Expert familiarity with typography and general design principles
- Experience leading a team of junior designers/developers
- Familiarity with Flash a plus
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Experience juggling multiple concurrent projects
- Ability to work full-time from our Santa Monica location

Front-End Developer
TotalBeauty.com is seeking a talented full-time Front-End Developer to join our growing team.
The front-end developer will help our engineering and development group realize and execute complex UI challenges utilizing the most up-to-date open standards and practices in use on the Web today. Responsibilities include developing site-wide HTML and CSS coding standards, functional integration of design concepts into a PHP-based content management system, and recommending new processes for improving overall user-friendliness of site components.
Reporting to the Sr. Product Development Manager, the ideal candidate must be an extremely self-motivated individual who has worked on enterprise-level applications and who is an ardent evangelizer of progressive Web standards and techniques (the more cutting-edge the better!). The candidate will also be extremely adept in UI conceptualization and be able to work on multiple projects concurrently in a fast-paced media environment with limited supervision.
Job Responsibilities
- Work closely with site engineers and art directors to combine functional and creative assets.
- Develop and optimize site pages utilizing XHTML and CSS, establishing best practices, keeping in mind site load and cross-platform and cross-browser compatibility
- Work with art directors and project managers to conceive innovative front-end solutions to UI challenges
- Work with other departments to develop concept and advertorial sites for promotional and presentation use
- Spearhead front-end development for mobile and social media applications
- Maintain all analytics and ad trafficking tags (Google, DART), and manage reporting systems
- Experiment with new technology, and get paid to do it!
Candidate Requirements
- Expert-level coder in XHTML, CSS, Javascript, DHTML
- Experience working in a LAMP-oriented development environment
- Full knowledge of browser types and browser quirks
- Advanced knowledge of AJAX (knowledge of XML and PHP a plus)
- Familiarity with SVN and/or CVS
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Experience juggling multiple concurrent development projects
- Ability to work full-time from our Santa Monica offices
- Familiarity with content management systems
