What comes first? Forget the chicken and the egg, we're talking about our skin care products, like serum, moisturizer, face oil and sunscreen. A cabinet full of products to keep you blemish-, wrinkle- and sun spot-free means nothing if you don't know in what order to apply them. Instead of slapping them on and crossing our fingers, we conducted a skin care nerd-out session with board certified dermatologists Dendy Engelman, M.D., and Craig Kraffert, M.D., who is also the president of Korean skincare line Amarté. We grilled them to find out which products should be applied first, last and everywhere in between so that they can perform exactly as they're supposed to. Here, these derms school us in the exhaustive process of layering skin care. read more
I think about pollution every day. I really think about it when I run outside (which I do three or four mornings a week). Next to a highway. In Manhattan. While I'm diligent about applying an antioxidant serum and sunscreen before I run (even if it's cloudy in the middle of February), according to a recent study published in the "Journal of Investigative Dermatology," that's not enough. Pollution is giving me wrinkles. read more
There's a handful of things that can scare you into wearing sunscreen: fine lines, age spots, wrinkles on wrinkles, a killer burn. But when you have a darker complexion, it's easy to think that all of these sun-related skin issues don't apply, because you erroneously think you're immune to the sun's aging rays. The harsh reality is, UVA and UVB rays are dangerous to everybody, no matter how dark your complexion is. And where more serious consequences like skin cancer are concerned, dark-skinned people may be at an even greater risk. read more
The last thing you want to hear in your head after slathering on a self tanner is that Oompa-Loompa song. We've all been duped by too-orange self tanners, no? Nothing's worse than trying to do the right thing by avoiding the sun and arduously applying a lotion, cream, foam, gel or spray to your body, only to wind up with dark elbows and streaky legs. Adult acne seems like a cruel joke. Weren't we supposed to leave zits behind with our fluffy '90s bangs and high school boyfriend? See products
Raise your hand if you've ever gotten an embarrassing, lobster-like sunburn or a dorky farmer's tan. Yup, us too. What about having tanorexic tendencies by soaking up the sun any chance you get and/or hitting up the tanning bed for that insta-bronze and rush of endorphins? Check. Or what about arduously applying sunscreen, but missing that big patch on your upper back, the tops of your feet or your scalp? Check. If you're guilty as charged to some of these sunscreen offenses, then let's get with it already and make healthy skin a priority. See mistakes
Next time you find yourself annoyed by slimy seaweed at the beach, consider this: Swimming in it may actually do fantastic things for your skin. read more
Poor pores. Even though they're essential for a healthy complexion (they release protective oils onto the surface of your skin), we like to think we'd be better off without them. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a myth that we can shrink our pores down to micro size. Their magnitude is largely determined by our genes. The good news is, treating skin right (hello, daily sunscreen!) can help keep pore size in check. The rest comes down to sleight of hand. Here, the 10 latest and greatest products to help make your pores do a disappearing act. read more
